Guide to Onyx Storm Characters, Dragons & Signets

Here is a list of all the characters that appear in Onyx Storm. Please note that some of them are new characters we haven’t seen before, while others are returning, including the protagonists, of course.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains spoilers for Onyx Storm. Please make sure you’ve read the book before proceeding.

Returning Characters from Fourth Wing and Iron Flame

Violet Sorrengail: Our female protagonist. In Fourth Wing, Violet became a powerful figure by bonding with two dragons, Tairn and Andarna, and developing a lightning-based signet. In Iron Flame, her second signet was hinted at through shared dreams with Xaden, and in Onyx Storm, it’s revealed to be dream-walking. Violet deepens her relationship with Xaden despite his struggles, discovers she has been touched by Goddess Dunne, and becomes Xaden’s legal consort.

Xaden Riorson: Xaden evolves into a truly morally gray character. As the Duke of Tyrrendor, he sharpens his shadow-wielding and intinnsic signets. His bond with Sgaeyl remains strong, but he loses control several times. Xaden transitions from initiate to venin asim, marked by permanent red veins around his eyes after a brutal channeling incident to save his dragon.

Asher Sorrengail: Finally revealed as Violet’s father, Asher was a Lieutenant Colonel and scribe. He passed away from heart failure after traveling to the Isles with Violet. There, he allowed Goddess Dunne to touch Violet but didn’t complete her dedication, leaving his reasons unclear.

Mira Sorrengail: Violet’s older sister shows significant growth in Onyx Storm. Despite occasional jealousy over their parents’ perceived favoritism toward Violet, Mira embarks on a journey to uncover family secrets by speaking to their grandmother, Niara.

Brennan Sorrengail: Brennan steps into the spotlight by openly reclaiming his Sorrengail name. A skilled strategist, he loves and supports Mira and Violet unconditionally and always finds ways to mend their wounds, both physical and emotional.

Theophanie: The main antagonist in Onyx Storm, Theophanie is a maven and a dark wielder. She’s a powerful storm wielder who relentlessly pursues Violet, believing she is the key to turning venin. Theophanie is cunning, intelligent, and rides an enormous wyvern.

Aaric Graycastle (Prince Cam Tauri): The son of King Tauri, Aaric is loyal to the innocent and level-headed in crises. He is bonded to a blue dragon, Molvic, and possesses a powerful precognitive signet, which Violet realizes despite his efforts to keep it secret.

Rhiannon Matthias: A second-year cadet in the Riders Quadrant and Violet’s best friend. Now a Squad Leader, Rhiannon continues to develop her summoning signet while remaining a patient and fiercely loyal ally to Violet.

Sawyer Henrick: A second-year cadet and metallurgist. Sawyer focuses on developing a prosthetic to help him ride his dragon again.

Ridoc Gamlyn: A close friend of Violet, Rhiannon, and Sawyer. His loyalty is unwavering, but he becomes upset when he learns Violet kept Xaden’s venin transformation a secret, demanding transparency among their group.

General Melgren: The commanding general of Navarre remains cold, calculating, and devoid of kindness.

Dain Aetos: Dain undergoes a major character evolution in Onyx Storm. He shows steadfast loyalty to Violet, even stealing from his father to help her, despite risking his relationship with Colonel Aetos. Dain’s caring nature extends to Sloane Mairi.

Halden Tauri: King Tauri’s firstborn son and Aaric’s older brother, Halden is one of Violet’s ex-boyfriends. Violet recalls their brief relationship, which ended when she discovered him cheating on her with his professor. He’s cruel, immature, and prone to tantrums.

Jack Barlowe: Presumed dead in Fourth Wing, Jack returns in Iron Flame as a rider, later revealed to be venin. In Onyx Storm, he spends the story as a prisoner, answering Violet’s questions in exchange for alloy-infused magic.

Imogen Cardulo: A ruthless third-year student and a growing ally to Violet. She helps protect Xaden’s secret and is devastated by the loss of her best friend, Quinn. Onyx Storm gives glimpses into her perspective, showcasing her relationship with her dragon, Glane.

Garrick Tavis: One of Xaden’s closest friends. Garrick reveals his second signet and proves to be an excellent distance wielder while helping protect Xaden’s secret.

Bodhi Durran: Xaden’s cousin and a third-year cadet. With his counter-signet, Bodhi is now second in line to become the Duke of Tyrrendor due to Xaden’s new title.

Jesinia Neilwart: A scribe from the Scribes Quadrant and part of Violet’s resistance movement. Although stripped of her path to adeptship, Jesinia remains loyal, using her knowledge to help fight dark wielders.

Colonel Aetos: Dain’s father and former advisor to Lilith Sorrengail. In Iron Flame, he’s revealed to be a villain working with venin. In Onyx Storm, he ascends to General of Basgiath, replacing Lilith.

Catriona Cordella: A talented flyer from Poromiel, Catriona joins Violet’s squad and becomes a steadfast ally. She accepts Xaden’s lack of interest in her and begins a relationship with another flyer, Trager.

Sloane Mairi: Liam’s younger sister and a siphon. She fears channeling after killing Lilith Sorrengail while powering the wardrone, but she assists Brennan and Mira in a pivotal moment.

Aura Beinhaven: A fire-wielding wingleader who opposes deserters rejoining Basgiath. She meets her end after killing a professor out of fear.

Felix: A calm, silver-bearded mentor who helps Violet master her lightning signet.

Viscount Tecarus: A political figure from Poromiel who becomes King in Onyx Storm.

Drake Cordella: Catriona’s cousin, a captain, and a researcher on dark wielders. His sense of humor lightens the mood.

Maren Zina: A petite gryphon flyer and Catriona’s best friend. After losing her parents, she saves her brothers and brings them to Aretia.

General Lilith Sorrengail: Violet’s mother. A rider at Basgiath War College, Lilith sacrifices herself to protect her children.

Naolin: Tairn’s former rider, mentioned briefly for saving Brennan during the Battle of Aretia.

Quinn Hollis: Imogen’s best friend and a third-year student with the signet of astral projection.

Lynx: A first-year bonded to a dragon and shadow wielder, serving as magic’s balance since Xaden has turned venin.

Colonel Lyron Panchek: Commandant of the Riders Quadrant, revealed as a venin spy.

Signets in Onyx Storm

We already know quite a lot about signets. Also, our main characters have their signets known but as we introduce new characters, we’re still finding out what they can do. In a new twist, we learn that Garrick also has in fact two signets (like potentially other marked ones too), and that Violet’s second signet is dream walking.

Onyx Storm Map

Surprisingly, the Onyx Storm map did not change, even though we introduced isles to the south. I anticipate that in Book 4 the map will contain these as well. Please note that there are three elements here which are on black background rather than white: Iakobos River, Tyrrendor Providence (with Lewellen, Aretia and Cliffs of Dralor) and Bay of Malek.

  1. Some of these things on this page say from Iron Flame and some say Onyx Storm.

    1. I’m trying to bring things forward by reminding readers about what happened and how the arc continued in Iron Flame and now Onyx Storm. Is this confusing? I can change it to be OS alone.
