Early Life

Asher Sorrengail (formerly known as Asher Daxton) is Violet’s father and Lilith Sorrengail’s partner. Together, they had three children: Violet, Mira, and Brennan.

Little is known about Asher’s early life, except that he was a scribe who eventually became stationed at Basgiath War College alongside his rider partner, Lilith. Asher shared his knowledge of history, languages, and poisons with his children, fostering their intellectual growth. He had a particular fondness for puzzles, often leaving intricate challenges for Violet to decipher, allowing her to unlock the secrets of his work.

During his life, Asher left books for Violet with Narelle Anselm, a book merchant on the isle of Deverelli.a It is revealed that he once took her to one of the isles in an attempt to dedicate her to Goddess Dunne. However, while Violet was touched by the Goddess, the dedication was never completed, leaving the reasons for this decision shrouded in mystery.

Work

He has published works under two different surnames: Asher Daxton and Asher Sorrengail.

Asher Sorrengail had researched about second Krovlan uprising and feathertails as well as the isles.

To determine the order in which the tomes were written, we are going to look at the military ranks in front of his name:

Unnbriel: Isle of Dunne by Second Lieutenant Asher Daxton
(Second Lieutenant is the lowest rank in this list, so this was written first.)

Hedotis: Isle of Hedeon by Captain Asher Sorrengail
(Captain is higher than Second Lieutenant, so this was written second.)

Zehyllna: Isle of Zihnal by Major Asher Sorrengail
(Major is higher than Captain, so this was written third.)

Subjugated: The Second Uprising of the Krovlan People by Lieutenant Colonel Asher Sorrengail
(Lieutenant Colonel is the highest rank here, so this was written last.)

  1. Not that it’s important but I feel his other writing should be listed. —Colonel Daxton’s Guide to Excelling in the Scribe Quadrant.

    1. OH. Wait something does add up.
Why is he publishing under both surnames?
Colonel Daxton…same rank as Colonel Sorrengail

      1. Do you think it’s not his work? I assumed it was his work since he was such a dedicated scribe.

        1. I honestly do not know. There must be a reason why. He is the same person for sure. On the isles that lady did say Asher Daxton’s girl.

      2. In an interview with RY for Variety Yarros specifies that Colonel Daxton is not Asher, but a relative of him. Saying that Asher is a scribe legacy, but that he took his wife’s name Sorrengail (specifically noting his name change reflects this when among his writings as his rank changes). This might be the first time I’ve heard her specifically confirm Lilith as his wife and not just love of his life etc so I thought I’d mention it here. Assuming the specific name change between Second Lieutenant and Captain ranks indicates this is when their marriage took place I wonder if we will learn more about their relationship timeline and how that interacts with all the secrets they had and with Violet herself. I think we are told Asher and Lilith met as third years or something like that possibly, but we know scribes aren’t allowed to marry as soon as riders are. Have we ever been told how old Violet’s parents were? Based on the references we can possibly infer that Asher went to Unbriel (at least the first time) before he was married/before Violet was born, back when he was still Asher Daxton but does that mean he went back a second time later on when he attempted to dedicate Violet to Dunne? How often did he travel so far abroad? Especially since he can’t travel via dragon. I have so many questions surrounding Violet’s dad, honestly surrounding all of her extended family lore that I hope we will learn more.

        1. It’s weird why she would give them the same first name then. If it’s not the same Asher…
But I agree, how did he travel so far so many times?
Mira says “Mom and Dad took Violet”, but I’m pretty sure he must have visited some of those isles on his own too.
