Rebecca Yarros has officially sent the Empyrean fandom into full detective mode again, because a brand new Empyrean book is coming in 2026.
And no, before we all start hyperventilating, it is not Book Four.. Please make sure to Pre-Order it Today!!!
The mysterious listing currently appears as Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros, and it is already available for preorder through major retailers. The book is currently scheduled for release on September 29, 2026, and Rebecca Yarros’s own website now refers to it as an “Empyrean secret project” and a brand new Empyrean book for dragon lovers.
So yes, this is real. Yes, it is Empyrean. Yes, it is coming before Book Four. And yes, we have absolutely been left to spiral.
But what actually is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)? Is it a novella? A companion book? A prequel? A missing-scene story? A guide? A journal? A Ridoc-focused emotional attack? Let’s put together everything we know so far.
Spoilers ahead for Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm.
What is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)?
Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is the current placeholder title for a new book by Rebecca Yarros set in the world of her bestselling Empyrean series.
Waterstones describes it as a brand new Rebecca Yarros title set in the world of the Empyrean series, while also making the important point very clearly: this is not the fourth instalment in the series.
Rebecca Yarros’s official website also lists the project under “Peculiar Stars & Empyrean secret project,” with a preorder button for the Empyrean secret book dated September 29.
That means the safest summary is this: we are getting a new Empyrean-world book in September 2026, but it is not the next main novel in Violet and Xaden’s five-book arc.
Honestly, “Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)” is one of the funniest and most ominous placeholder titles I have ever seen. It basically screams: yes, it is Empyrean; no, it is not the book you think; please stop asking; also please continue screaming.
Release date for Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)
The main release date currently showing for Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is September 29, 2026.
Amazon lists the publication date as September 29, 2026. Waterstones also lists the book as coming on September 29, 2026. Barnes & Noble lists the same release date for the hardcover, ebook, and audiobook formats.
Some international listings are slightly different. Dymocks, for example, currently lists the hardcover publication date as September 30, 2026, which is likely a regional release-date difference.
So for now, the date to mark is:
September 29, 2026
Or September 30, 2026 in some regions.
Publisher, ISBN, formats and page count
Here is where things get interesting, because the retailer metadata is not completely consistent yet.
Amazon currently lists the US hardcover as published by Entangled: Red Tower Books, with ISBN-10 168281808X, ISBN-13 978-1682818084, and a print length of 224 pages.
Waterstones lists the UK edition through Little, Brown Book Group, with ISBN 9780349450612, and also lists the book at 224 pages.
Books-A-Million also lists ISBN-13 9781682818084, Entangled: Red Tower Books as publisher, and 224 pages.
However, Dymocks still lists the hardcover at 176 pages, with ISBN 9780349450612 and a publication date of September 30, 2026.
So what page count should we trust?
Right now, I would not treat either number as absolutely final. The stronger current pattern from Amazon, Waterstones, and Books-A-Million points to 224 pages, but there are still active listings showing 176 pages. That means the page count is probably still placeholder metadata, or different territories are working from different early data.
This matters because when we all first saw 176 pages, the immediate assumption was: novella. And honestly, that still might be true. A 176-page Empyrean book would almost certainly not be a main-series novel. But now that multiple retailers are showing 224 pages, and especially because of the audiobook runtime, I would word it more carefully.
At this point, it is probably best to call it a shorter Empyrean-world book, not necessarily a confirmed novella.
The audiobook clue is very interesting
There is also an audiobook listing, and this might be one of the most important new pieces of metadata.
Booktopia lists the digital audiobook for Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) with a duration of 11 hours and 40 minutes, published by Recorded Books, Inc., available on September 29, 2026.
Barnes & Noble also lists an audiobook format alongside the hardcover and ebook.
Now, an 11-hour-and-40-minute audiobook feels substantial. That does not automatically mean this is a full-length main novel, because audiobook length depends on narration speed, formatting, front/back matter, and other production details. But it does make me side-eye the old 176-page listing a little bit.
If this were a tiny companion pamphlet or a very short bonus-scene collection, I would not expect nearly twelve hours of audiobook. So whatever this is, it may be meatier than we first thought.
Again, that does not mean Book Four. It does not mean a full mainline Empyrean novel. But it does mean this secret project might be bigger than “cute little extra content.”
It is not Book Four
This is the one thing the title itself is practically begging us to understand.
Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is not the fourth main Empyrean book.
Waterstones explicitly says that although the book is set in the world of the Empyrean series, it is not the fourth instalment.
Woman’s World also reported that Yarros shared on Instagram that the surprise book had not altered Book Four’s timeline and that it was not the upcoming graphic novel.
This is important because Book Four is still its own thing. Rebecca Yarros has begun writing the fourth Empyrean novel, and Business Insider reported that she officially returned to writing Book Four in March 2026.
So we are getting:
- This mysterious Empyrean secret project in September 2026.
- Book Four later, separately.
- Book Five after that, because the Empyrean series is planned as five main books.
Basically, we are being fed, but also tortured. Standard Empyrean experience.
Why is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros NOT the graphic novel?
First of all, I’ve got to tell you, a graphic novel fits everything in the publishing info. A common graphic novel trim size is around 6″ × 9″, and it’s usually between 120–200 pages. We knew one was coming, as Rebecca Yarros had been talking about it for ages, so it was only natural that we all thought that. But then, as mentioned above, I think the publishers would have made it into a big thing, and probably major news outlets would have published an interview with Mrs. Yarros to announce it. But that didn’t happen.
Instead, we got an ominous Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four). Well… lucky for us, Rebecca Yarros kindly confirmed it is NOT the graphic novel on her personal official Instagram. Thank you so much, Rebecca Yarros, for confirming what we’ve been thinking… you have a surprise for us.
If it’s not the graphic novel, then what is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)?
Yarros said the project began as a surprise idea she had about a year earlier, but fans found it as soon as the publisher put it up for preorder and sent it to number one on Amazon before the official reveal.

Plot Secret Project: We honestly thought it had to do with Empyrean, of course, but we thought it might have been the Monopoly release, some more merch deals, or even the TV series working on casting.
But nope, it turns out it was this. Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four). Untitled Empyrean… wow! It could be so many things, it’s driving us all insane.
Oh and before we all ask, NO, I do not think there will be the bonus scenes from Iron Flame. Please check the board above. Those will be separate so yes, we will still get bonus Iron Flame chapters on top of this awesome sauce secret project!!!
The Ridoc clue
Now let’s talk about the clue that made everyone immediately lose their minds: Ridoc.
A newer June tease has been circulating in which Rebecca Yarros said her niece was reading NOT BOOK FOUR and had reached “the part where Ridoc…” before cutting herself off.
That does not confirm the plot. It does not confirm Ridoc is the narrator. It does not confirm he is the main character. It does not confirm he dies. It does not confirm he turns venin. It does not confirm anything horrifying, and I am saying this mostly to calm myself down. I do have a good theory about Ridoc by the way…
But it does confirm one thing: Ridoc matters enough to be teased.
That is huge, because Ridoc is one of those characters fans love, but he has not always been at the center of the biggest lore conversations. He is funny, loyal, sharp, brave, and emotionally important to the squad. A story that gives him more room could be incredible.
It also raises questions. Is the novella partly from Ridoc’s POV? Is there a scene involving him that is especially shocking? Is he connected to a missing timeline? Does he know something? Does something happen to him? Or is Rebecca Yarros simply enjoying watching us spiral?
That last one feels very possible.
The Alex Warren “Eternity” clue
And now we have another deliciously painful clue to obsess over.
Fans have been discussing Rebecca Yarros using or referencing Alex Warren’s song “Eternity” in connection with the September Empyrean release. Several public fan posts and Instagram snippets have tied the song to Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four), with fans saying Rebecca connected “Eternity” to the upcoming Empyrean project.
I am not going to quote the full lyrics here, because song lyrics are copyrighted, but the emotional direction of the song is very clear: grief, separation, sacrifice, longing, paradise, being left behind, and someone unreachable.
So… that is fine. Totally fine. Nobody panic.
Actually, panic a little.
If this song really is connected to the September Empyrean book, it makes me think this secret project may be far more emotional than we first expected. It does not sound like a lighthearted dragon guide. It does not sound like a cute Basgiath rulebook. It sounds like loss. It sounds like someone grieving. It sounds like someone separated from the person they love. It sounds like a story about sacrifice.
Now, could that point to Xaden and Violet? Absolutely.
Could it point to Liam? Obviously.
Could it point to Lilith? Yes….
Could it point to Brennan and Tairn’s previous rider? Also yes.
Could it point to one of the historical figures from the First Six? Very possibly.
Could it even point to Ridoc? I hate that we have to ask, but yes, technically.
The important thing is that the song clue should be treated as a thematic hint, not plot confirmation. Rebecca Yarros choosing a song does not mean we can reverse-engineer the entire book from the lyrics. But it does give us a vibe.
And the vibe is: this might hurt.
So, is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) a novella?
This is the million-dollar dragon question.
When the first listings showed 176 pages, it made total sense to call it a novella. A regular Empyrean novel is much longer. Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm are all massive compared to 176 pages.
But because several current listings now show 224 pages, and because the audiobook is listed at 11 hours and 40 minutes, I would be careful about calling it a confirmed novella.
It could still be a novella. It could be a short novel. It could be an illustrated companion. It could be a collection of interlinked stories. It could be an in-world text with narrative material. It could be a Book 3.5-type story.
The only thing we can safely say is that it appears to be shorter than the main Empyrean novels and separate from Book Four.
But in spirit? Yes, I think most of us are still treating it like a novella or companion story until Rebecca tells us otherwise.
Theory one: the missing 12 hours after Onyx Storm

Let’s start with the obvious theory.
At the end of Onyx Storm, Violet wakes up with a wedding ring, a goddess-blessed marriage to Xaden, missing memories, missing dragon eggs, and missing riders. Imogen then reveals that she wiped Violet’s memories at Violet’s own request.
Excuse me?
Naturally, fans immediately wondered whether Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) could explain those missing hours.
This theory is tempting because it would give us answers before Book Four. It could show what happened during the wedding. It could show why Violet asked Imogen to wipe her memories. It could reveal what Xaden did, where he went, and why the dragon eggs disappeared.
But that is exactly why I am skeptical.
Those missing hours feel like one of the central mysteries of Book Four. Business Insider reported that Book Four is expected to address what happened between Violet and Xaden, where Xaden and the other missing riders are, the missing eggs, and what Andarna learned from the irids.
Would Rebecca Yarros really answer all of that in a side book before Book Four?
I would love it. I would inhale it. I would emotionally combust. But I do not think we are that lucky.
So this theory is possible, but I think a full explanation of the missing wedding timeline is unlikely. A partial glimpse, though? A different POV? A scene that adds emotional context without solving the whole mystery?
That, I could see.
Theory two: the missing two weeks from Iron Flame
This is another strong theory, and honestly, it might fit better than the missing Onyx Storm hours.
In Iron Flame, Violet is captured and tortured by Varrish, and there is so much we do not see from the outside. We know what Violet experiences, but what about everyone else?
What was Xaden doing in those two weeks?
What were Rhiannon, Ridoc and Sawyer going through?
What were Tairn and Sgaeyl doing?
What was Dain thinking?
What were Garrick, Bodhi and the marked ones planning?
What was the revolution doing in the background?
There is so much emotional material there.
A shorter Empyrean book could fit beautifully into that missing timeline. It would not necessarily spoil Book Four. It would give readers more time with beloved characters. It could include multiple POVs. It could give Ridoc a major moment. It could connect to grief, longing and sacrifice, especially if Xaden is at the center of it.
If the “Eternity” clue is about separation and wanting to reach someone you cannot get to, then the time when Violet is trapped and Xaden is trying to get back to her suddenly becomes very interesting.
Do I know if this is what Rebecca Yarros is doing? No.
Would it make sense? Very much yes.
Theory three: a Ridoc-focused story
Because of the “the part where Ridoc…” tease, we now have to consider the possibility that this book is partly or fully centered on Ridoc.
And honestly? I would read that immediately.
Ridoc is the kind of character who could carry a shorter Empyrean story extremely well. He brings humor, but he is not just comic relief. He has survived Basgiath, war, loss, rebellion, impossible odds, and the kind of constant danger that tends to break people. He has also been right there beside Violet through some of the biggest events in the series.
A Ridoc-focused novella could do several things at once:
It could show us a major event from outside Violet’s POV.
It could develop the squad emotionally.
It could deepen the cost of the war.
It could show what ordinary riders are facing while Violet and Xaden are at the center of the storm.
It could make us laugh and then absolutely destroy us.
That last part feels very on brand.
The Alex Warren “Eternity” clue makes me nervous here, because if Ridoc is involved in a story about grief, sacrifice or separation, I do not like where my brain goes. But again, there is no confirmation that anything bad happens to him.
For now, the only responsible conclusion is: Ridoc is relevant. We just do not know how.
Want my theory? I think the Untitled Book is a special Lilith Sorrengail POV. And I’m certain she knows grief because Papa Sorrengail was the love of her life. And she did everything to protect her children. I have no doubt that Brennan was not sent to die the way we imagined it…and I’m also certain that Lilith did something with Ridoc to further assure that Violet is protected now that Xaden is a brand new lieutenant and not in Basgiath anymore. How can you have Violet protected without your main character to take care of her? My answer is Ridoc…and I think Ridoc agreed, and he bonded a second dragon. That tattoo on his neck? No way is just a tattoo. And conveniently, another brown…
Theory four: Liam, Sloane or a story about grief
If there is one character who immediately comes to mind when we talk about grief, longing and someone unreachable, it is Liam Mairi.
Liam’s death still haunts the series. It haunts Violet. It haunts the readers. It haunts me personally every time someone says “It’s been my honor.”
A Liam-related story could take several forms. It could be a prequel showing him before Basgiath. It could be letters. It could be something from Sloane’s perspective. It could be a story about the marked ones before the events of Fourth Wing. It could show what Liam sacrificed, what he knew, or what he left behind.
Sloane is also becoming more important. Business Insider reported that Yarros has said Book Four will include multiple points of view and some portion from Sloane Mairi’s perspective.
So a shorter Empyrean story that deepens Liam and Sloane’s emotional history would make sense. It would hurt. It would fit the “Eternity” clue. It would not necessarily spoil Book Four. And it would give readers something meaningful while we wait.
Would Rebecca do that to us?
Yes. Next question.
Theory five: Lilith Sorrengail’s journals
I keep coming back to Lilith.
General Lilith Sorrengail is one of the most fascinating morally grey characters in the series. For so much of the story, Violet sees her as cold, controlling and impossible to understand. But by the end, we know Lilith loved her children fiercely enough to sacrifice everything.
There is a lot we still do not know.
What did Lilith know?
When did she know it?
What did she hide from Violet?
What did she know about venin, dragons, wards, and the truth beyond Navarre?
What was her relationship with Violet’s father really like?
What did she put in her journals?
A Lilith-focused novella or journal-style companion could be devastating in the best way. It could give us answers without pushing the main timeline forward too much. It could explain emotional and political history. It could connect to sacrifice, grief, parenthood, secrets and love.
The “Eternity” clue could fit Lilith too, especially if the story explores her relationship with Violet’s father, her choices during the war, or the cost of protecting her children.
This is one of my favorite theories because it could be emotional, lore-heavy and still not spoil the central Book Four mysteries.And as I said before…Ridoc fits so well in this one.
Theory six: Brennan’s story
A lot of fans think this could be Brennan’s book.
I understand why. Brennan has huge gaps in his history. He “died,” survived, joined the revolution, became a central figure, and clearly knows far more than Violet does. We also have the mystery of Naolin, Tairn’s previous rider, and the lingering questions around what really happened when Brennan was saved.
A Brennan novella could answer a lot.
Maybe too much.
That is my main hesitation. Brennan’s history is so tied to resurrection, signets, Naolin, Tairn, the rebellion and the secrets surrounding the wards that I wonder whether Rebecca Yarros would want to reveal all of that before Book Four.
But a carefully limited Brennan story? Maybe.
If the book focused more on his emotional history than on the biggest magical answers, it could work. It could show what it cost him to leave his family behind. It could explore survival, loyalty and sacrifice. It could also explain why he is the way he is now.
Would I read the book of Brennan? Obviously. Would I trust it not to emotionally ruin me? Absolutely not.
Theory seven: The Fables of the Barren
Now this theory is incredibly fun.
What if Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is an in-world version of The Fables of the Barren? Rebecca, I would cry if this were real.
This would be such a cool addition to the Empyrean universe. The fables matter. Violet grew up with them. They contain truths Navarre tried to bury. They are connected to venin, folklore, history, and possibly the deeper magical structure of the world.
A fables collection could work beautifully as a shorter Empyrean book. It could be written like an in-world text, with stories, annotations, lore and maybe even hidden clues for Book Four and Book Five.
The downside is that it might reveal too much. The fables are dangerous because they are not just stories. They are history. They are warnings. They might contain answers about venin, dragons, the gods, the First Six, and the origin of the wards.
So if Rebecca Yarros gives us The Fables of the Barren, I would expect it to be clever. It would probably answer some questions while creating twenty more.
Which is rude, but also exactly what we signed up for.
Theory eight: Major Afendra’s Guide or the Codex
Another theory is that this could be an in-world guide, like Major Afendra’s Guide to the Riders Quadrant or some kind of Codex-style book.
That would be fun, especially because the epigraphs in the Empyrean books already make the world feel bigger than Violet’s narration. A guide could include rules, historical excerpts, military notes, Basgiath information, dragon lore, and maybe commentary from characters.
But I am less convinced this is the answer, mainly because of the audiobook runtime. Nearly twelve hours of audio feels long for a simple rulebook or guide unless there is a lot of narrative material included.
So if this is a Codex or guide, I think it would need to be more than just “here are the rules.” It would probably need annotations, hidden lore, historical accounts, or connected stories.
In other words, not just a guide. A guide with teeth.
Dragon teeth, ideally.
Theory nine: a prequel about the First Six
Could this be a prequel about the First Six?
I would absolutely love this.
The First Six are one of the biggest lore magnets in the Empyrean series. We know they matter. We know the official history is probably incomplete. We know Navarre’s entire system is built on old choices, old magic and old lies.
A prequel could show us how Basgiath began, how the wards were created, how dragons first chose riders, how the rider system developed, and what really happened at the beginning.
The problem is that this might be too important.
A First Six prequel could reveal enormous lore that Rebecca might want to save for Book Four or Book Five. Still, if written carefully, it could be more mythic than explanatory. It could give us one version of the beginning without revealing the full truth.
Would I throw money at a First Six prequel? Immediately.
Theory ten: Ash’s journals and the Isle Kingdoms
Another possibility is that the secret book could connect to Ash’s journals or the Isle Kingdoms. We are desperate for this, but let’s face it, again…too many details…
The isles became much more important in Onyx Storm, and Business Insider reported that Yarros has hinted there is more to discover about them. She reportedly said the map of the isles was considered too spoilery, which is a very suspicious thing to say.
Ash’s journals could be a brilliant way to give readers more information about the world beyond Navarre without fully pushing the current timeline forward. It could explore travel, politics, magic, old alliances, and the parts of history Violet still does not know.
But again, this could spoil too much.
The next two main books seem like they are going to deal heavily with the isles, dragons, venin, Xaden’s choices, and the missing pieces of history. So I am not sure Rebecca would hand us a full Isle Kingdoms lore dump in September 2026.
But a partial journal? A fragment? A story that seems historical but becomes important later?
That feels very possible.
Theory eleven: Andarna’s missing timeline
This is my wishful-thinking theory.
I would love to know where Andarna went, what she learned, and what her heritage really means. I want to know more about the irids. I want to know what her return means. I want to know whether Violet and Andarna’s bond changed while Andarna was away. I want to know everything.
But I do not think Rebecca Yarros is going to give us all of that before Book Four. I think this is very much Book Four material.
Andarna’s secrets feel too central to the next stage of the series. Business Insider noted that Book Four is expected to address what Andarna learned from her time with the irids, which makes me think this is main-book material.
Still, a short story from Andarna’s perspective would be iconic.
Imagine the attitude. Imagine the ancient-dragon baby-dragon energy. Imagine Tairn’s stress levels.
I need it, but I do not expect it.
Theory twelve: the gods, Malek and Basgiath’s beginning
This is one of the theories I personally cannot stop thinking about.
What if the secret project is not about Violet’s immediate timeline at all? What if it is about the gods, Basgiath, conscription, Malek, and the deeper spiritual structure of the Empyrean world?
The gods are mentioned often enough that I do not think they are just decoration. Malek especially feels important. The way death, sacrifice, oaths and power work in this world has to matter.
A shorter book about the origins of Basgiath, the rider quadrant, dragon bonding, or the relationship between magic and the gods could be incredible. It would also fit the “Eternity” clue if the story deals with death, paradise, sacrifice and the afterlife.
Would this be more lore-heavy than character-heavy? Probably but would also be soooo epic!
What I think it probably is
After looking at everything — the title, the official “secret project” wording, the page-count confusion, the audiobook runtime, the Ridoc tease, and the Alex Warren “Eternity” clue — I do not think this is a simple guidebook. I do not think it’s the Codex, I do not think it’s Brennan’s book…
My best guess is that Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is some kind of character-focused Empyrean novella or short novel that fills in an emotional gap without giving away the central Book Four plot. So right now, my money’s on Liam’s letter to Sloane or Lilith’s journal/POV.
I think it may include a major Ridoc moment. (but a small reminder that it’s not unlike Rebecca Yarros to throw us red herrings. it might have been the moment Ridoc…tried to sleep with Liam or god knows what else…)
I think it may deal with grief or separation (fits many characters).
I think it will show us events from outside Violet’s POV.
I think it will hurt more than we originally expected.
And I think Rebecca Yarros is enjoying every second of watching us try to figure it ou (and fail at it haha)
If I had to rank the theories right now, I would put them in this order:
- A Liam/Sloane or marked-ones emotional story.
- Lilith’s journals or another family-history story.
- A Ridoc-relevant story, possibly with multiple POVs.
- A missing timeline story from Iron Flame or Onyx Storm.
- Brennan/Naolin/Tairn backstory.
- An in-world lore text like The Fables of the Barren.
- A First Six or Basgiath origin prequel.
- Ash’s journals or Isle Kingdoms material.
- A Codex-style guide (we might as well…scratch this one)
But honestly, with Rebecca Yarros, the real answer is probably option eleven: something none of us guessed properly.
What we still do not know
For all the clues we have, there is still a lot that has not been confirmed.
We do not know the final title.
We do not know the cover.
We do not have an official synopsis.
We do not know the narrator.
We do not know the timeline.
We do not know whether it is officially a novella.
We do not know whether Ridoc is a main character or just involved in one memorable scene.
We do not know whether the Alex Warren song is a direct plot clue or just a thematic hint.
We do not know how much, if anything, this book will reveal before Book Four.
And honestly, that is part of the fun.
Frustrating? Yes.
Emotionally healthy? Probably not.
Fun? Absolutely(ish).
Final thoughts
Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) is officially one of the most mysterious upcoming releases in the Empyrean world.
It is not Book Four. It is not the graphic novel. It is coming on September 29, 2026 in the US and UK. It is listed through major retailers. It appears to be a shorter Empyrean project, though the page count is currently inconsistent across listings. It has an audiobook runtime of 11 hours and 40 minutes. Rebecca Yarros’s own website calls it an Empyrean secret project. Ridoc has been teased. And the Alex Warren “Eternity” clue has made the emotional possibilities even more suspicious.
My current theory is that we are getting an emotional Empyrean novella or short novel that fills in a missing piece of the world, probably through a character or timeline we do not usually get to see.
Maybe it is Ridoc.
Maybe it is Liam.
Maybe it is Lilith.
Maybe it is Brennan.
Maybe it is Xaden trying to reach Violet.
Maybe it is something historical and devastating.
Maybe it is all of the above and we are about to be ruined.
Whatever it is, I am ready. Actually, that is a lie. I am absolutely not ready. But I will be preordering anyway.
