Everything we know about Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros

We were all pretty shocked and excited when we saw Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros announced on major retailers, including Amazon. Please make sure to Pre-Order it Today!!!

The book is 176 pages and is due to be published on September 29, 2026. At first, many anticipated that it could be the graphic novel, especially given the page count. A normal Empyrean novel has more than three times the page count, so naturally the first thought was: it’s the graphic novel.

But then… we all know the graphic novel is coming. Why not say that? Why not create huge fanfare around it and get us all excited and let us pre-order it? I will tell you why. Because Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros is not the graphic novel.

Why is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) by Rebecca Yarros NOT the graphic novel?

First of all, I’ve got to tell you, a graphic novel fits everything in the publishing info. A common graphic novel trim size is around 6″ × 9″, and it’s usually between 120–200 pages. We knew one was coming, as Rebecca Yarros had been talking about it for ages, so it was only natural that we all thought that. But then, as mentioned above, I think the publishers would have made it into a big thing, and probably major news outlets would have published an interview with Mrs. Yarros to announce it. But that didn’t happen.

Instead, we got an ominous Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four). Well… lucky for us, Rebecca Yarros kindly confirmed it is NOT the graphic novel on her personal official Instagram. Thank you so much, Rebecca Yarros, for confirming what we’ve been thinking… you have a surprise for us.

If it’s not the graphic novel, then what is Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four)?

Plot Secret Project: We honestly thought it had to do with Empyrean, of course, but we thought it might have been the Monopoly release, some more merch deals, or even the TV series working on casting.

But nope, it turns out it was this. Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four). Untitled Empyrean… wow! It could be so many things, it’s driving us all insane.

Oh and before we all ask, NO, I do not think there will be the bonus scenes from Iron Flame. Please check the board above. Those will be separate so yes, we will still get bonus Iron Flame chapters on top of this awesome sauce secret project!!!

First of all, it’s 176 pages, meaning we’re getting a novella. And at that page count, here are some of the options that I can think of.

Untitled Empyrean (Not Book Four) – The missing two weeks from Iron Flame

Going back in Rebecca Yarros’ timeline again, we know that she likes to publish some bonus chapters for us. So when she posted some dialogue between Xaden and Garrick, we were certain we needed to expect the bonus chapters of Iron Flame. But… they never came! We assumed it was because Mrs. Yarros is taking more time in between publishing. Besides, as I mentioned above, I am now certain we are getting the Xaden POV chapters separately as per her to do list. So the Untitled? Oh that’s a whole novella on its own!!!

We don’t know anything about what happened in the background while Violet Sorrengail was being kept and interrogated by Varrish. Her close squad members? Going out of their minds. Her dragons? WOW, I can only imagine. And then there’s Xaden, hunting wyvern for her and literally turning the whole continent upside down for her.

If you look at timelines, we normally get around one year per book, give or take, so 176 pages for 2 weeks of intense revolution sounds like something Mrs. Yarros might deliver for us. There are a lot of POVs there. Rhiannon, Dain, Sloane, Garrick, and so much more. It could be an interesting insider perspective.

Now, would I be excited about it? I’m excited about just about anything to do with the Empyrean series, so I will happily take anything!!!

What else can it be, though? So many options

The book of Brennan

Ask any fan, and this is the number one prediction. For whatever reason, everyone expects this to be the book of Brennan. Not me. I don’t know why, but I feel like what we are getting in the epigraphs is enough for now. It’s an interesting book, don’t get me wrong, but perhaps I don’t see it as the centre of the story right now.

That being said, a Brennan journal would be far more interesting, although we haven’t come across one. We would love nothing more than to understand what happened to Brennan and to his lover… aka Tairn’s previous rider.

The Fables of the Barren

Now this I can get behind. It would be amazing to get The Fables of the Barren written as a novella. That would be incredible!!! The only downside is that I think it might give away quite a lot of the plot for us, so perhaps Mrs. Yarros would be careful with it. We already know from the fables that the dragons are not… the good ones. We already know a lot about venin from the fables too. And chances are we would learn about sky magic.

It would be incredible, and it would probably be the coolest addition. Given that we’re talking about 176 pages, it seems fitting, but also… long for a book of fables.

The Codex

Again, it would be cute, but I imagine the Codex being more like a merch item rather than a novella. This is because it’s a bunch of rules put together and would not cover 176 pages. Far too few rules for riders for such a long book. So if anything it would need to be a full anthology for us.

The prequel?

Could it all be a prequel? Where we learn about the first six? That would be so much fun!!! And we have so many questions about all the first. What were their powers? What happened?

Ash’s journals

Wouldn’t that be epic? Wouldn’t you like to read the 5 books from Ash’s travels? We all wonder what’s in them. About the isles. We know snippets, but it would be incredible to learn more. That would, however, offer quite a bit of information about the Isle Kingdoms, I think, and again, I’m not sure Rebecca Yarros wants to spoil that. I have this feeling the next two books are going to be heavily intense and mad.

Lilith’s journals

Interestingly enough, we don’t know much about these. Mira read them, but did Violet? We are all very curious about Lilith, a morally grey character who, in the end, sacrificed everything for her children.

The beginning? The Gods!

I personally think she is going to give us information on…Basgiath and how conscription came to be. We know that there is a huge difference between how dragons pick their riders and how gryphons pick their fliers. The fliers always call Basgiath the death factory of a college and we’ve been talking about the Gods for quite a bit..could it be that we could learn about the Gods? Malek? His importance here at Basgiath? I would love this. I would literally throw all my money for learning about the Gods. It would be amazing amazing amazing!!!!

The missing timeline when Andarna is gone

Well, this is wishful thinking, because let’s face it, there is no way we are so lucky as to get so many answers from Rebecca Yarros before Book 4. It would be incredible to learn more about Andarna, her heritage, her family, and where she went. Why is she back so soon? Did they ever sever the connection? Or was it just paused? Could she redo their magical connection? So many questions.

The missing timeline during the wedding

Let’s face it, this is what we are all hoping for, but it’s the most unlikely scenario. We do not know what happened during the so-called wedding. Xaden is gone, dragon eggs are gone, Violet’s memories are gone… it’s all chaos. But we do know Imogen wiped Violet’s memories at her own request. It would be amazing to really know what happened, but I think this is literally the main plot for us for Book 4: finding Xaden, discovering what happened, and putting together the pieces. So there is no way we are so lucky as to get all the explanations in a novella. But it would be lovely.

So what do you think it’s going to be? Are you excited that we are getting a new mini book before Book 4? I think it’s very awesome that we have so many new things to look forward to: the new Monopoly game, the graphic novels, a new novella, and a TV series in the making, plus 2 more awesome books!

Share that Venin and Wyvern are real!

  1. These are the novella projects I have long been hoping for:

    – Violet’s parents’ love story (because 😍 ♥️)

    – Sawyer’s POV: Poor guy spent an ENTIRE year at Basgiath before everyone got there and then had to repeat year 1. He also lost his leg and 100% had a tough times coping with that. Plus he’s got a sweet little love story with Jesinia, and we don’t really know anything about his family. I think it would be awesome to get more of his story!

    1. Please don’t hate me but I really don’t want Sawyer’s POV. But I’d love Ridoc’s…to learn about how he mayyyyybeeeeee has two dragons?

  2. colonel kaori’s field guide to dragon kind

  3. I’ve been curious to know if anyone else would like to know where Dain’s mom is? Is she alive, does she live somewhere else? There’s never been a mention of her that I recall in any of the books. If she divorced Aetos, then totally understand, if she’s dead then why no mention of her? It’s talked about several times how Dain and Violet grew up together because their “parents” were stationed together. I stress the word parents. So, was his mom there?

  4. I wondered if its the missing months from Liliths diary, their travels & Violets dedication. Maybe they even meet people from Loysam with gold flecks eyes??

  5. Sometime in the last week the page count jumped to 224.

  6. Leothen cuts the bond between Andarna and Violet after explaining that ONLY Irrids can bond any rider at any time, and so, if she wishes, can bond Violet again upon return.

  7. However, with the short timeline and Andarna’s wing not working properly, I don’t believe she ever made it to the islands.
