Fourth Wing Read Along – Chapter 15

Major spoilers ahead, so I’m going to assume you’ve finished the entire series. These thoughts cover all the books, not just Fourth Wing.

The epigraph gives us a small entry from the Book of Brennan explaining how surviving Threshing doesn’t mean you survive the day—being able to hold your seat is equally important… something Violet had already failed at.

Here is something interesting: “I’m going to die. That’s the only possible outcome.” She doesn’t say right now. And I do think this could be a type of foreshadowing—maybe for Book 5? Maybe it’s just the author toying with us. But I think every bit of information in this book matters.

And then we get: “I know exactly who and what you are, Violet Sorrengail.”
We don’t know, though, do we? What is Violet Sorrengail? Again—is she a god? Part god? Part dragon?

“You will trust me.”
Not a question. An order.

I think I liked that a lot. At first, it seemed like it made Violet look small, but I think it actually shows that we should trust Tairn.

I also love that Tairn chose Violet because she saved her—the golden dragon. This ties into the little bit of foreshadowing from the previous chapter, when Violet once again said that her next move might determine the rest of her life. It did. Her intuition is spot on.

The next few paragraphs are wonderful and genuinely tear-inducing. The fact that Tairn calls her the smartest and the most cunning, and the way he tells her that strength of courage is more important—it’s beautiful.

We also learn an important rule:

“Didn’t anyone tell you that you’re not supposed to speak to humans who aren’t your rider? Don’t go getting yourself in trouble, Goldie,” I whisper. “From what I hear, dragons are pretty strict about breaking that rule.”

We also learn a little bit more about Melgren and his beady eyes, as well as how highly decorated Lilith is.

“Because only a rider and the roll-keeper know a dragon’s full name and she’s not certain I’m really his. That’s exactly what she’s implying. Like I’d be able to hijack Tairn.”

Another interesting one here. See? Like I’d be able to hijack Tairn. Meaning that venin can somehow do this. There have been instances. That’s what the author is implying here, right?

We get to the Book of Riders and the redhead doing the roll call. Let’s face it—we were all utterly surprised at this point. Tairn and Andarna? How many of you thought Violet would end up bonding just Andarna? And then… just Tairn? Well, this was such a sweet and fun twist in the book.

Violet announces both dragons—and all hell breaks loose. It’s wonderful to see just how talented Rebecca Yarros is at ending chapters and making you desperate to read the next one.
