Fourth Wing Read Along – Chapter 13

Major spoilers ahead, so I’m going to assume you’ve finished the entire series. These thoughts cover all the books, not just Fourth Wing.

Chapter 13… nothing quite as humbling as witnessing Threshing, aye? I’m not sure if you remember, but I do have a timeline for these books, so I think it’s essential to remember that we are at October 1st. And as you know, October 1st is always Threshing.

The chapter opens with an explanation of Threshing and a quick memo: “I will not die today.” I don’t know why, but I truly think these small nuggets of information are very important. Is she telling that to herself? To Malek? Either way, she will not die today—it’s true.

And then again, we have this order from Ridoc: “Don’t die,” Ridoc orders. I do feel like these cadets have relationships with the gods. There is no other way.

As the chapter progresses, we hear Jack say that he’s hunting the golden dragon—the feathertail. Have we ever stopped to analyze why? Is Jack just cruel? Why would a cadet be so concerned with hunting down a small dragon to kill it, versus just finding his own dragon? Is he already venin? Is someone telling him to do this because it’s the best-case scenario? We don’t quite know, but it seems odd that someone would be so preoccupied with this, right?

Here is another thing: “No one knows anything about feathertails, so I don’t know where Jack is getting his information, but I don’t have time to focus on his assumptions right now.”

Is Jack already venin at this point? I cannot imagine any dragon wanting to bond with him, knowing that he tried to kill a dragon—a feathertail!

“Stomach pitching, I have that Parapet feeling again—whatever I do next has overwhelming odds of ending my life.” It’s interesting just how intuitive she is, isn’t it? As if she has a superpower of some sort.

The moment Xaden appears, we immediately go to: “My scalp prickles as each of our heads swivel in his direction.” So we know Xaden is using his second signet to read… probably everyone’s minds.

Well, this was most certainly entertaining, but also interesting—to read so much about Jack and his deep desire to kill a random small dragon. But not just any dragon: a feathertail. And I do think this is very relevant, probably for the books to come.

One response to “Fourth Wing Read Along – Chapter 13”

  1. I would probably focus most on the name Threshing itself. Why Threshing, and why do both Poromiel and Irids refer to it as “harvest”? A coincidence? Or does it carry some meaning? The meaning can be similar, yet it’s called something else. The fact that both Poromiel and Irids know the ritual but call it by a different name feels like it could be an adaptation of an old custom into a new one, with a new form and a new name.
What keeps coming to my mind is Kronos – a god of time and harvest, overruled by a new pantheon. Andarna, time-stopping, Irids – the old order that was overruled, driven out, replaced by a new pantheon.
As for JFB – RY said in an interview that he only has generally known information about feathertails. Which is odd, because even Violet finds that strange. So what’s behind it? Is RY just playing with wording, and maybe he knows about feathertails only what everyone else does, but knows more about Irids? Could Berwyn have already been visiting him in his dreams at that time?
