Iron Flame Unhinged Theory: Those who do not burn for Malek, get their loved ones back

Coming to you with a great theory about Malek, the God of death and the need to burn items for Malek. I am going to warn you, this is a fairly unhinged theory and one I do very much love.

This theory was developed in partnership with one of the readers here named hayruşş. Let’s dig right in.

Who is Malek and why do we burn for him?

Malek is the God of death. When someone dies, their souls are commended to Malek.

In the books, we quickly learn that things are getting burnt for Malek. All things. And nobody should keep any items from the deceased.

“The flames catch and whoosh as it becomes more fuel for the fire, just another tribute to Malek, the god of death.”

“It is a grave offense against Malek to keep the belongings of a dead loved one. They belong in the beyond with the god of death and the departed. In the absence of a proper temple, any fire will do. He who does not burn for Malek will be burned by Malek.”

The above is taken from “Major Rorilee’s Guide to Appeasing the Gods, Second Edition”. Please be mindful that this is the second edition and not the first. We do know that many books have been already “edited” to fit and suit the new Navarre history. Could this be another one of them?

There are items which we didn’t burn

There are a few items out there which we know about, that we didn’t burn.

Brennan’s journal is very important in Fourth Wing. This item was not burn but kept by Mira in secret.

Papa Sorrengail’s research continues to be somewhere. Violet kept it and kept it a secret when Lilith and Colonel Aetos asked about it. She also kept dad’s book of fables and his note.

Liam’s letters were not burnt either. Violet kept them and gave them to Sloane.

Why am I telling you this? Stay with me, I have a reason. But first, one more thing we need to discuss: runes.

Runes are not taught at Basgiath

Why are runes not taught at Basgiath?

“Everything in Tyrrish had to be changed. The only unique thing we kept were our runes because they’re in too much of our architecture to justify changing.”

Runes?” I repeat like a bird, staring at the etched shapes.

“Yes. Runes. Wielded power woven for set purposes.” He exhales slowly. “Which you know nothing about because Basgiath doesn’t teach Tyrrish runes, even if the college was f*cking built on them. Guess we’ll ask Trissa to teach that class. She has the most patience out of the Assembly.”

“They banned runes so they wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands.” She glances at the fliers. “Your hands, specifically. Get good enough at runes, and you can compete with a fair amount of signets.”

Liam knew runes

Marked ones from Tyrrendor naturally know runes. Xaden, Imogen, Sloane, everyone knows runes. They are taught them from a very early age.

Do you remember the time when Liam was wielding ice in the sky when battling wyvern? That wasn’t his signet, he was just using…runes. At least that’s one of my theories.

The runes on Violet’s dagger? They are protective as well as useful for her.

So what is the theory? Runes can bring people back…maybe

Brennan Aisereigh. Aisereigh which means resurrected. Marbh, which means dead.

Brennan has a rune on his palm. Brennan’s items were not fully burnt. Could it be that he was somehow, brought back?

Liam was also brought back as a hallucination. Let’s not forget, he does say that he is not wandering but he is precisely where he needed to be. Could it be that some runes he created for himself (remember Liam, tinkering with wood all the time) as well as the fact that not all his items have been burnt, allowed him to “return” if only temporarily?

Could it be that in Onyx Storm, we will be able to communicate with Papa Sorrengail? By using runes and his unburnt research?

I don’t know if we could resurrect all dead people with runes and their items. But what if we could somehow? And by banning runes under the pretext that they will fall in enemy hands, as well as making people burn things for a God, Navarre created even more lies, to keep the dead…dead. And rule by fear.

I will leave you sit with theory and Professor Kaori’s words:

“After all, bonding makes you a rider, but resurrecting someone from the dead? Now, that makes you a god. I somehow don’t think that Malek takes kindly to a mortal treading on his territory.”

  1. Hiiiiiii CORYYYY I am baaaack xD
sorry for being absent for sooo long time… lets say I was going through alot of things xD

BUT we are here for the theories XD
I LOVE the theory and I am fully invested… Xaden said runes can SENSE when they are needed (like the one on Violets dagger for the prison door) so WHAT if the Rune? or something in the little wooden Andarna (a rune?) sensed that Vi needed his company ….

    .
    U know whats next xD

    I was busy…
Listening all over the books… and I noticed some things
    – did we reconsider the possibility tha Vi was adopted? I mean…. in the first book…. I think Garrick said it…. like “didnt the general have had only one daughter?”
So…. maybe she was adopted and nobody knew… only a few people or maybe they thougt that vi was … a close cousin or….

and something to Vi’s second signet… there MIGHT be hints in the second book…. Maybe control…. maybe distance… (u know my last theorie about that … somewhere down in the theories xD) BUT i noticed something while they where in the cave with solus… (its not like in the book but from my memory) They where pulled back like with an invisible force…. (Cat , Sloane and the Griffin) so…. MAYBE it was Andarna (maybe the 7th race can do telekinesis? we know NOTHING about them) Or it was Violet…
And come to think about that part in the book… Sloane was accidentally pulling Vi’s power from her… just a little bit… Sloane thougt she emptied her… but… we all know.. it was just a little bit and Sloane was screaming of pain… so… WHAT THE …. … (Kuro don´t say those words *slap*) HOW MUCH POWER DOES VI have?????

Uhm… I think I ve got everything from my mind….
I Hope I can write sooner next time ^^

    1. Kuroooo!! So good to hear from you! I hope the stuff you were going through were all positive and transformative. If you faced any difficulties, I’m sending hugs your way.
July has been terrible for me, I’ve been ill for the past three weeks. Ugh! But I’m getting better, and I’m just excited to be able to be out of bed (as you can tell, I’m back with my theories haha)

Runes CAN sense when they are needed. That’s exactly it, right? I’m thinking that there is a rune on that little Andarna Xaden gave Violet from Liam. I’m 1000% certain because it’s the only thing Violet could have had on her. No dagger, obviously, she was a prisoner.
No connection with her dragons either, because of the serum.
Rebecca Yarros is far too clever to make this into a simple hallucination. Come on, he was there! “right where I’m needed”. Because HE WAS NEEDED.

      —-

I’ve theorised on this site before but for some reason most fans don’t love the idea that Violet was adopted. I assume because Lilith was pregnant and the kids would have seen her bump?
Also why would have Lilith said “Maybe you’re more like me than I gave you credit for.”
Hmmm, I’m not sure. Mira looks like Lilith. Brennan looks like dad.
But it does feel like little Violet is the odd one out.

So check this out, I updated the second signet page: https://www.empyreanriders.com/articles/iron-flame-theory-violets-second-signet/
      Let me explain what’s new:
      1) https://www.empyreanriders.com/articles/fan-onyx-storm-theory-violet-is-our-distance-wielder/ -> To be fair, this is really compelling to me. But RY did say that her second signet will be totally underwhelming. So I’m a bit like…hmm, distance wielder seems pretty damn awesome and really, really overwhelming.
      2) https://www.empyreanriders.com/articles/onyx-storm-theory-is-violets-second-signet-to-do-with-control/ -> The whole Iron Flame she cries because she needs/wants control. Besides, with Xaden being venin, he needs control. Who better to wield some control into him than Violet? She already “wielded him” right? Control is again pretty overwhelming and awesome to me.
      3) https://www.empyreanriders.com/articles/iron-flame-theory-violets-second-signet-could-be-storm-wielder/ -> Another fan pointed this out. I’m not convinced to be fair, BUT it would nudge to the new title. It would also nudge to the idea that Violet or Xaden are not normal, they are built to withstand a storm (oh how I love this easter egg). Finally, it would pretty underwhelming. Like, I would be like, meh, a bit of a waste of signet from Andarna but there we are. So… maybe?

Violet has a lot of power. Also, I don’t think Violet can be drained per se. That’s my theory. I think she can be partly drained but not fully.

Oh want to know something spicy? On the community, people are theorizing that the smut will take a weird turn. Xaden always loses control with Violet right? So what if, during the spicy scenes in Onyx Storm we will have a part when Xaden is draining Violet? (not quite on purpose) but they realise ooooops, he can’t really drain her somehow? Because I do think part of her is like the stones from Braevick…already drained 😀

Alright, novel your way haha. Speak soon!

      1. Heyyyy I am glad ur better^^
And yes most things where psitive ^^ new work location and stuff much better atmosphere and stuff ^^

I read the theories and yes… yes… while personally I don’t think that her second signet is something with the distance wielding stuff.. (we will know for sure when Yarros reveales the signet and we WILL for sure be like… OH COME ON IT WAS OBVIOUS xD)

But another thing that bugs me was the communication with dragons. (maybe also some stuff for u to research?)

There where some hints that the dragons CAN speak to all humans if they want to… (like Violet to Andarna when she bonded) “Did nobody tell you that you aren’t allowed to speak to a human u haven’t bonded?” (little did she know xD) But there WAS definetly a Time when dragons spoke to humans without the restrition ONLY to their bonded rider. The only exeption they make in this…. rule? are paired dragons with their riders…. because… why not? The Humans are bonded for life anyways so… why shouldn’t they talk to the other dragon as well?

Ah and another thing. (yes I am definetly back xD)
We are maybe ignoring the fact, that while they “escaped?” from Basgiath …. they found THREE DRAGONS willingly not only to carry the scribes BUT they had to make sure these untrained humans wheren’t falling to their death… (maybe Jesinia wasn’t that scared bc she trusted Vi) but.. did they communicate with them? (kinda bonded with them? ) or HOW did they carry them… dragons are VERY proud… and carrying humans in like…. carriages? NAH didn’t happen. xD

And.. another thing… did a dragon ever break the rule only riders? so… what if there where dragons who bonded with… lets say a wandering scribe? and they formed a… forbidden bond? (maybe the reason the 7th dragon race was banned? not only for their exeptional abilities to change their shape but maybe other things?)

        I know i know I am MAYBE thinking… garbage?:… but… these are the things that wandering in my head…. ;-;

So… I hope ur day was … will be good (dunno the time zone u are in xD )

        see yaaah
        Kuro

        1. I’m very happy to hear all great things came your way.
I’m in the UK btw, you asked about the time zone 🙂

The moment we’ll get the second signet it will be so obvious. What annoys is that I figured out that Xaden was inntinnsic in Fourth Wing. Why can’t figure out for sure her second signet? It’s so annoying.
Hmm…you are right. Why would dragons not be allowed to talk to unbonded humans? That’s odd. Alright, more research my way 😀

What are your thoughts about those dragons who carried the other humans? Like Jesinia? I’m not sure what to think about it. Do you reckon it was just convenient?

I do think dragons did have different rules before. Probably they would have bonded with just about anyone right? But then they made it maybe more difficult?
I was wondering if the 7the breed was banned somehow from the Vale or they just said “yeah, this is not for us, see you never”.

Btw, someone posted such a good theory about Brennan and his rune. The thought being that Naolin might have turned venin right, and Brennan was his resurrected somehow. The one who he infused life into. Much like the venin and their wyvern.
Kinda that moment when the runes in the wyvern gave us a clue. Could it have been Naolin that gave us the runes?

Also have a good day/evening haha

  2. HIIII ^^/

(uhhh that means we are not THAT far away…. there is only the north sea between us xD )

So first the dragons carrying the Humans… these must have been definetly green ones…. or what do u think? and… IF they carried the humans on their backs…. they MUST secured them like tairn violet while her first flight….
And I think Jesinia wasn’t scared or maybe just a little… because Violet managed everything and made sure they had their OWN dragons… so….

and the rule thing…. i just listened to the part when Andarnas secret was revealed and she said to violet: ” I’ve waited for 650 years….(summary: Just for u) BUT she could NOT have known WHERE Violet would be in the college… so my hot take: Andarna WOULD have bonded with Violet no matter what…(imagine scribe Violet wandering outside of the college and Andarna just be like HIIII ^^/ xDDD) and no dragon could forbid her… bc shes the head of her own cave….

Hmmmm Brennan and his rune was be like… here is a little detail…. it will NOT be important in this book but… here it is xD

what do u think about that?

    Yours Kuro

    1. Wait wait Kuro.
Am I too tired today? I’m not seeing the little detail :((( was it an attachment and it didn’t work?

I see what you mean re Andarna. I do wonder that now. Although, I would like to believe that Andarna has precognition. Which is why she is always “where she’s needed”. Because she sees everything in advance.
Now I’m going to have to ask you a very hard question. Do you think we will lose either Andarna or Tairn?

  3. heyyy :3
no no u are not tired xD
With the detail I meant that Yarros put it there and .. it never was mentioned again.

The tough question… uhm.. well that brings up directly the next one:
Would Violet die if she looses one of them…
(I definitely hope we loose neither of them)
    .
Aand I started the… ( I honestly lost count xD) time re listening to the books and… It hit me like Violets lightning…

Amdarna said.. she waited hatching until Violets 18th birthday…
Are we MAYBE missing the detail that … theoretically… Violet WAS bonded to Andarna since then? not officially like with the markings and stuff.. but Andarna CHOSE HER… And I was wondering IF Andarna COULD be watching over her since then?
    .
And I thought about another thing:
None!! Of the dragons ever! Had the intention to kill Violet… (ok solus… but he doesn’t count xD he was … mental)
Maybe there was some intern in the dragons… Imperion? dunno what the original says (german version sorry xD) However maybe there was some like… we need her.. keep her alive… (Tairns one sentence “I know who and what u are!” sticks really out… )
Even Baide could have killed her but she didn’t… (again… the only dragon really hostile towards Vi was Solus) Not even Kodagh was hostile towards her when she spoke directly to him… he was… interested? 🤔 And I BET he would have talked to her… directly… but again.. I think he didn’t wanted to do TOO much to reveal… some rules are BS …
    .
    And speaking of… speaking xD
In that scene when Andarna killed that Venin and Cat made the… “mistake ” to talk to Andarna directly… Andarna says” You don’t talk directly to dragons you aren’t bounded to… human” … but.. to who? to Cat?
My mind is full of theories… but ahhhhh …

    Yours Kuro

    1. Alright alright, so I don’t think Violet will die. I think the bond with another dragon will keep her alive.
Which leads me to believe that Tairn…maybe, might die? I cannot imagine RY killing the only 7th breed left there.

Hmmm….this is an interesting point. Could a dragon bond a human BEFORE Threshing? BEFORE they are aware? That would be interesting….
I know what you are strikes me as Violet being some sort of God…or part venin 😀

I’m a little confused about Varrish and Solas. They were def venin and Solas was controlled by Varrish. But even Jack knew not to kill Violet as per the order of the General Venin. So why was Varrish so onto it?
Didn’t he follow the same orders?

Yeah, Cat asked Andarna a question and Andarna replied You don’t talk directly to dragons you aren’t bounded to… human”

But Violet always talks to dragons she is not bonded to. Could it be that Violet is not…human?

    2. P.S. sorry for the delay, was not in front of the computer (for a small change)!

  4. Heyyyy ^^/
    (Nah don’t worry xD)

but wouldn’t Tairns death kill Sgaeyl? And with this Xaden?

So… didn’t Jack try to kill Vi during sparring? With the energy?

And much more interessting: Tairn asked Violet IF she was a rider… that brings me to the conclusion that some dragons accidentally bonded to a wandering soldier or scribe… or even to a citizen… (and then the rules where set ONLY bond with riders NO ONE ELSE xD )

And back to Violet and Andarna: There is this question in my head: like was Andarna able to change her looks even in her feathertail form? … Maybe she was always watching… like at the parapet…. (why is that thing called like that… in german its Viadukt ) and… at the presentation… was andarna ready to interfere if SOME dragon…. yk… ? And i was wondering about the two green ones…. maybe they only smelled the dragonscales…. but maybe…. was there something else….

And you too think that andarna spoke directly to Cat?

Hot take: Violet is somehow related to Malek XDDDD (who knows xDDDD in these kinda worlds is anything possible)

    Kuro ^^/

    1. I don’t think Tairn’s death will kill Sgaeyl. I think we all know she is ruthless so chances are, she would survive it.
Jack def tried to kill Violet. And I wonder if that was BEFORE he had contact with some sort of sage.
The words “you are a rider, are you not” do make you pause a little, it’s true. What could it really mean?

I don’t think Andarna was able to change as a feathertail. I think all feathertails are golden and that’s that. But she knew what type of dragon she will be.
I do think Andarna was always watching for a long time.

So my thoughts exactly about the green dragons. I wonder if they were the head of their den somehow. And they knew Andarna needed the right of benefaction and they basically checked her out, the same way Sgaeyl checked Violet out.

I think Andarna makes her own rules. But if you look closely at the way it’s written it does look like Andarna spoke in italics, so the same way as she talks to Violet. I think she “screamed” in Violet’s hair via their mental connection only and not actually spoke to Cat. But of course, we cannot be sure.

At the same time, if you go back to Fourth Wing:

None of your business what I choose or do not choose to channel toward my rider,” Tairn answers with a growl.
      This is going well.
      “He says—” I start.
“I heard him,” Xaden counters, not sparing me a glance.

See? Tairn also speaks in italics, when Xaden can hear him. But again, technically this is done via their connection.

HEY, that’s my theory!!! I am 100000% certain that Violet and Malek are related. I have so so much gathered on that haha

This is a fun! Hope you had a lovely weekend.
      Cory
