Onyx Storm Theory: Berwyn and Xaden are both from Tyrrendor

I’m putting this theory together after a conversation with one of our fellow readers, Tejaswani.

Tejaswani believes Berwyn is somehow Fen Riorson. While I don’t think Berwyn is Xaden’s father, I do think there’s a connection between them.

Let’s start with some quotes and the obvious clues:

“He drags a single, long fingernail down my throat, exposing an expanse of tan arm under his robes, and I twitch, fear accelerating my heartbeat.”

Tan arm. This man is not white. Just like Xaden. Xaden has deep brown, tawny skin, right?

“His dark, eyelash-less eyes narrow.”

Again—dark eyes. Just like Xaden. Xaden has onyx eyes.

Now, let’s talk about General Daramor.

His name literally means “For Love,” right? So… did he turn for love at some point? Is that how he knows that Xaden could turn for love too?

“The region of the Barrens—the dry, desert-covered peninsula in the southeast that all dragonkind abandoned after General Daramor ruined the land during the Great War—is completely painted in crimson. The stain stretches into Braevick, over the Dunness River.”

“[…]it simply labels the enemy as General Daramor and our allies as the isle kingdoms.”

This brings us to Xaden’s venin nightmares:

“Fight me and die, or join me and live beyond the ages, but you will never escape me, not when I’ve waited centuries for someone with your power.”

Centuries. The same as Theo.

And we know that the venin from Xaden’s nightmares is the same as Berwyn. How?

“Snapped whatever tether he had on me and killed him.”

Xaden thinks he killed him.

“You’re dead. This isn’t real.” I repeat the phrases mentally when my lips refuse to form the words. “This is only a nightmare.”

Xaden is certain that he killed the venin.

Then there’s this clue:

“The Sage draws a sword from his robes, and the next flash of lightning reflects in the emeralds adorning the top of the hilt. Whisps of silver hair blow in the breeze at the edge of my vision, and the sword of Tyrrendor rushes toward my chest.”

Oooooh. Let’s pause. Emeralds on the hilt? Wait for it.

Now let’s go back to Deverelli:

“The dagger was mine to give,” Halden bites out, staring at the jeweled blade. “It looks to be antique, with a silver handle and emeralds the size of my fingernails adorning the hilt.”

“No, it wasn’t.” Courtlyn shakes his head.

“It’s mine,” Xaden says, keeping his expression neutral. “Or rather, it should have been. It’s the Blade of Aretia, appropriated for the royal vault by Reginald during the Unification.”

The Sword of Tyrrendor. The Blade of Aretia.

Both adorned with emeralds.

Xaden and the Sage? Both from Tyrrendor.

So does this mean Berwyn was one of the six? Could he have been one of the first riders?

Xaden is the sixteenth Duke of Tyrrendor.

Berwyn could have been any of the ones before him.

We know Berwyn is from Tyrrendor. And we also know that Tyrrendor is… special.

Tyrrendor has always had dragons. It was built to serve dragons.

And according to Asher Sorrengail:

“Tyrrendor was the last to cut contact with the isles. The province has a reputation for its cunning leadership, but in this case, I would add: astute.”

At first, I wondered if the son Panchek referred to wasn’t Jack—but maybe Bodhi.

Let’s compare Bodhi and Xaden:

“He’s handsome, with tawny brown skin crowned by a cloud of black curls and a litany of patches on what I can see of his uniform under his cloak. His features are close enough to Xaden’s that they might be related. Cousins, maybe? Fen Riorson had a sister, if I remember correctly.”

“The similarity between the cousins still gives me pause. Bodhi has the same bronzed skin and strong brow line, but his features aren’t as angular as Xaden’s, and his eyes are a lighter shade of brown. He looks like a softer, more approachable version of his older cousin.”

Bodhi grins, flashing a smile that looks exactly like my aunt’s used to.”

“Bodhi’s farther back and starts our way. His walk is so similar to Xaden’s stride that I almost do a double take.”

And then there’s this:

“By our best calculations,” Brennan says, rubbing his hands together to keep warm, “the six most powerful riders currently in Aretia are Xaden, Felix, Suri, Bodhi, Violet, and me.”

“Looks like there’s something to be said for family lines,” Suri notes.

But then again, Berwyn did say, “he has another.”

So something tells me this isn’t about Bodhi.

And given that Berwyn has been waiting for centuries for someone with Xaden’s power, we can assume Berwyn is very, very old.

Oh and Tyrrendor…had a crown before!

“Witty.” Her smile cracks another line in her lips. “You’re almost done waiting. He’ll be gone soon. The crown will be yours.”
Come on, get closer.
“We don’t have a crown.” Bodhi switches his sword to his left hand, freeing his right. “You don’t know me well enough to try and fuck with my head. I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted—protecting my cousin, my province.”

Yeah, there was a crown, alright. Plus if you check one of the comments for Zuzle below we also learn that in lore and legends, emeralds are actually called The Jewel of Kings:

Emerald symbolism encompasses not only royalty but also wit, eloquence, and foresight. (This is not from the empyrean series, but a quick search online for emerald symbolism).

Now, one last question that won’t stop circling my mind:

We have six provinces:

  • Calldyr
  • Luceras
  • Deaconshire
  • Morraine
  • Elsum
  • Tyrrendor

And we have six first riders.

We know about Warrick from Luceras and Lyra from Morraine.

Berwyn? I’m almost certain he was the first rider from Tyrrendor.

But what about Theo?

Something tells me she was from Deaconshire.

Why?

Because the temples to Malek and Dunne are huge in Deaconshire:

“Your temples to Malek and Dunne are disproportionately large compared to the other gods’ here.”

That makes me think she might have been dedicated centuries ago to the temple of Dunne in Deaconshire.

Of course, we have no way of knowing for sure.

But it would line up perfectly with this:

Berwyn and Theo are clearly in competition with each other.

And remember what Warrick said?

“Nothing kills powerful, unshakable love faster than opposing ideologies.”

So we don’t know for certain who is who.

But I am convinced that Berwyn and Xaden?

They’re related. And both are from Tyrrendor.

As for what Xaden needs from Berwyn?

I believe it’s the Sword of Tyrrendor.

What do you think? Do you see a connection between Berwyn and Xaden?

Share that Venin and Wyvern are real!

  1. I like this, but I wouldn’t let go of the Naolin theory just yet.

I’m not convinced the venin from the dreams is the same as Berwyn, but I might be over analyzing…

One, Theo was very dismissive of Berwyn as a teacher, they both seemed to be serving someone else.

Two, in one of Xaden’s dreams the venin says “the one who watched you” which means whoever was in his dreams was not at Resson. Berwyn was, Berwyn was the one who watched, he’s the one who stared down Xaden and Violet at the Aretian border after the wards were raised, and he fought Xaden at Basgiath (and survived!)…
“That’s one of their teachers. The one who escaped Resson”
“He was at the cliffs too.”

The venin from the dreams is our big bad, but I don’t think he’s Berwyn. He’s maybe our General Daramor… or third brother… or ancient king… maybe all three?

    1. Also please see what Zuzzle said. Xaden had BOTH the sword and the blade when they left Deverelli!
Also, can we take a moment to appreciate that Berwyn is 100% a dream walker? RY said there is only one person alive who can help her develop her signet. And something tells me…the person “alive” is venin

    2. So we’re dealing with a dream walker AND Berwyn?

      1. I think we just might be dealing with a dream walker AND Berwyn :/

Not to get too repetitive but the more complete quote from Xaden’s dream in IF is…

“Prove me right that you are a weapon worth retrieving […]THE ONE WHO WATCHED thinks you’ll never yield, that we should kill you before you grow into your full abilities.”

So I read that quote as the dream walker saying, he was NOT at Resson. Someone (Berwyn) reported back to him.

        And then later at Basgiath…

“That’s one of their teachers […] the one who escaped Resson.”
“He was at the cliffs too.” I fight to keep my voice calm.

Xaden then confirms in his POV chapter in OS that Berwyn was who he fought at Basgiath, which by the transitive property using the quote above, means Berwyn was who escaped Resson.

“Not even because he’s supposed to be dead. But because I. Can’t. Kill. Him.[…] “Watch carefully, my initiate,” Berwyn says to me over his shoulder, baring the scar down the middle of his face from when I threw him in the ravine at Basgiath.”

SO, to me, that reads as Berwyn being “the one who watched” he is reporting back to whoever the dream walker is… perhaps our Darth Vader to our Emperor Palpatine, if you will.

And then there’s the quote from Theophanie that dismisses Berwyn as subpar telling Violet that she can choose between the two of them for teachers, which tells me they are peers in the hierarchy of venin land.

“And when you come with him, you will remember that I let you live today and choose me, not Berwyn, as your teacher.” […]
“And why would I do that?”[…]
“Besides the fact that he’s subpar and you’d be chained to him, powerless to resist his orders?[…] I’ll let you keep both your dragons while giving you what you want most in the world. […] Control and knowledge.”

So yeah…I think they might be different characters :/

        1. My head….So many details.
Once I finish the read along for Onyx Storm I will do them for Fourth Wing and Iron Flame as well. I feel like it’s the only way to get all of the details and easter eggs in one place

        2. I need to reread it, but I’m almost certain that Berwyn is from Xaden’s dreams. Xaden repeatedly says so in the final battle of Basgiath. And I think Berwyn was in Resson—the one in blue with the cane. The one who was watching is someone else. Someone we haven’t seen yet, he was just observing the battle. He is also the one Theo refers to. He is their highest Venin. And I’d bet on Daramor.

          1. I BET too. It’s Daramor. Question is…is Daramor somehow one of the first 6? An ancient King? THE ancient King? The old Tyrrendor king?

  2. Absolutely agree. That sounds much better and more logical than Berwyn = Naolin. Berwyn is probably one of the First Six from Tyrrendor. I’m wondering whether all six turned or just some of them.

Another question is what role the Ruby Sword and Ruby Dagger will play. That pair of gemstone weapons isn’t a coincidence. Vi won the dagger randomly in FW. The sword is with the venin at the beginning of OS (during the “let’s kill JFB” mission). The Duchess of Morrein owns rubies.
What does Violet have to do with Morrein? Lyra was from Morrein. Is Violet our modern-day Lyra?
Was Lyra with Warrick the way we assume? Or was Berwyn involved—our historical Xaden? Warric was from Luceras. Granny Niara is from Luceras. …

    1. So it’s quite clear that each stone represents a color too. Which throws me off, because I expected Tyrrendor to have onyx and not emeralds, like the greens. I would say that Morraine, something to do with the reds, but again, not quite.

Are you struggling with the provinces and the relationships with the dragons? I am. Because they are not all from Navarre. Some are closers to Poromiel. Why would the ancestral grounds be only from around Navarre? Nothing closer to the Barrens?

      1. So, we’re I think we’re definitely going to learn that each color gem is associated with a particular province or family line or rider (or god/dragon?)

Whatever the reasoning, for the moment emeralds belong to Tyrrendor, and rubies seem to be Morraine. We don’t really have any good connections for any other gemstones just yet though we have confirmation on the existence of amethyst, citrine, quartz, and onyx.

My mind is also wondering if certain gems are better at holding certain types of magic… When the Amelian Citrine is finally found, Violet describes it as “A thumb-sized stone, I’m guessing was once the color of citrine now rests in it’s setting, cracked, hazy, and smoke-hued.”

We have continuously seen evidence that lack of color means lack of magic, and this gem was worn “by the first drift” which is not a line that should be brushed past. The riders have their “first six” why would the fliers not have their heroes and legends as well. (Another area of text for me to scour as I re-read;))

Ultimately, what I really want to know right now is what type of stones/gems did Colonel Mairi use to create the protection runes for the marked ones. Violet describes Xaden’s as “simple” but that feels like misdirection to me… whatever type of runes were needed to CREATE A RELIC THAT COULD CHANNEL MAGIC (insane!) probably needed a boost, and we know that the gems mined in Poromiel can amplify lesser magics…

Got a little off topic in my response, sorry, still collecting all my puzzle pieces on this one!

        1. No no, your pieces of puzzles are excellent. I’m thinking about putting together a theory about stones and gems.
And I think we need a proper theory but colors/ancestral hatchling grounds and their locations + if venin robes play a role at all. Zuzle has been toying with it!

          1. I’m totally failing with the Venin’s clothing, it’s driving me insane. However, it seems that generally, everyone (including Berwyn and Theo) wears red. Theo was in purple several times. Berwyn and his student wear blue. So, my current working theory is that the Venin play for red and have at least two factions – Berwyn’s blue and Theo’s purple. I’m still wondering if they might be connected to gods, either as rivals (competing with Malek for souls) or if some god (maybe of love – red, Daramor) turned to the side of evil out of jealousy or something similar… I would need to make some kind of registry of Venin clothing or at least a catalog of Berwyn and Theo’s wardrobes.

          2. What about maroon? The dude (sage?) in Violet/Xaden’s nightmare wears maroon. I think he is the actual sage, the dream walker!
The red and purple combo is really annoying. Also, I do wonder a little bit if it’s something to do with status.

            Maroon = sage.
            Blue = royal
Purple and Red = maybe Maven for different fights? Different purposes?

          3. As for colors/gods and Islands – My current working hypothesis:
Black dragons=Amaris – they are natural leaders (Tairn and Codagh), originally hatched in Aretia/Tyrrendor. Amari is the leader of the gods. The largest Temple of Amari is in Aretia. Riders on the continent/Amaralys wear black.

Blue dragons- Dunne- Blue dragons are fierce, fearless, and natural warriors. Their original location was in the south (Krovla). On the island of Unnbriel, they worship Dunne, and priests wear blue robes.

Orange dragons: On the island of Zehllyna, they worship Zinhal, the god of luck. Luck is fickle, just like the nature of orange dragons. On the island, they wear orange robes. Their original nesting grounds are in The Northern Esbens.

Green Dragons: On the island of Hedotis, they worship Hedeon, the god of wisdom. Priests here wear green robes. Green dragons are known for their intellect and wisdom. Their original grounds are in Basgitah – Morrain.
Here, I’m on very thin ice:
Irids: It’s quite likely that they are now on the Island of Love. But it’s probably not their original hatchling ground. But where? On continent? The Barrens? Another island? Deverelli – they are not connected to any god, they pretend to be pacifists (without an army)? Brown: The only thing we know about brown dragons is that we practically know nothing. They come from the north – Luceras?
Red dragons: original hatchling ground in Braevic, near Dunne river. No more information.

          4. I’m really frustrated that we know almost nothing about the Browns—just that they like the cold.

Here’s a random thought, so bear with me: How did these people even end up on the isles?

Originally, there was just one massive continent, right? Then something huge must have happened to tear it apart. If you look at the geography, it really seems like the Cliffs of Drarlor were once connected to something else. There’s no natural beach there—it’s as if the land was abruptly severed.

At first, I thought maybe the ancestral hatching grounds drifted to the isles, along with the Gods somehow. But that doesn’t quite make sense. The Oranges’ hatching grounds are still on the mainland—right in the middle of the continent—yet their isle is far away on Zehllyna. That completely contradicts my theory.

So now I’m back to square one.

          5. Deverelli = white tunics

    1. For anyone who reads this and needs a translation, I used an automated translation machine:

They certainly seem to have a connection. Long before Xaden became a Venin, Berwyn was already interested in him. However, in the dream you mentioned, where Berwyn says he has waited eras for a power like his, it made me wonder if that was truly Xaden’s dream that Violet invaded or if it was actually Violet’s own dream. Just think about it—Xaden’s power, while incredible, is like most others, extracted from the earth by dragons. Violet’s, on the other hand, seems to be drawn not just from the ground but also from the sky, which the Venins have expressed a strong interest in multiple times.

As for a possible connection between Berwyn and Theo, I’m sceptical. After all, Theo was already defeated in this book—it was an abrupt end, just as abrupt as her arrival. I keep wondering if she was just some kind of assistant, under the command of someone even more powerful. Anyway, just speculation.

Now, something completely unrelated to this theory that I’ve been thinking about lately. Have you noticed that those connected to orange dragons seem to be morally questionable and often try to harm Violet in some way? Solas was orange, and I don’t even need to mention Varish. Then there’s Jack, whose dragon—Baide (is that the right name?)—is also orange, and Amber, whose dragon, Claidh, was orange too. Just out of curiosity, I went back to check. Do you know who else is linked to an orange dragon? That’s right—Brennan. Anyway, it was just something that crossed my mind.

P.S.: I’m from Brazil, and my English is still terrible when it comes to expressing myself, so writing in Portuguese was easier for me. I hope you have the patience to translate this.

  4. Xaden already has the sword. He brought it to deverelli to attempt to trade.

    1. That was the dagger. There are two different items <3
He calls them the dagger of aretia and the sword of tyrrendor

      1. But he left Deverelli with both, right?

        1. Wait. No? Did he ever have the sword of Tyrrendor???? Let me go back reread. I thought he only left with the dagger? WTF. How did I miss this?
          BRB

        2. YUP! He does. Well that’s…different. So how the hell did Berwyn take it then? Well that confused me now.

“The steel lands on the table with a clatter, and I make quick work of sheathing Xaden’s swords at his back and packaging the dagger in his bag with the Sword of Tyrrendor.”

          1. I have to read the scenes. I remember we have seen the sword in Xadens dreams. The dagger was in the glass box from Zehyllna and an emerald for the ring was missing?

  5. Interestingly, the Dagger of Aretia was nationalized during the unification, while the Sword of Tyrrendor was apparently passed down from generation to generation. I would have expected it to be the other way around ( unification is about provinces). I think he only had the Sword in the dream. The question is whether Xaden ended up bringing it to Berwyn. Maybe the Sword is the “her” Xaden was supposed to deliver—not Violet.

    1. That would make sense but it would also be messed up. Why would he want a sword?
Also, clearly Xaden was willing ton trade the sword on Deverelli.

It would explain why Xaden would want “something” from Berwyn. If it’s the sword, then of course he would want it back.
Unless, one of his worst nightmares is to use the sword against Violet.

Btw, someone said, what if the venin in Xaden’s nightmares, are…Xaden. Future Xaden turned venin somehow.

  6. I like this theory that Berywn is Xaden’s ancestor. I do think he is ultimately after X’s shadow weilding, but in that same dream the tan arm and dark eyes are noticed, Violet (or is it Xaden – confusing now) a sweet smell is also noticed. Who else does Violet associate the word sweet with? Xaden. I wonder if that sweet smell is minty? Still really want to know how Xaden always smells like mint!

    1. I think the sweet smells is related to churram or the serum. That also had a sweet smell and taste!

  7. Really out there theory: can Xaden and Berywn be the same person? It just occurred to me that there is no way he can kill himself… he will need Violet to kill the other guy …

    1. I can see why you’d think that. They look similar in the dreams. They have the sword right? The sword of Tyrrendor.
But I can’t imagine them being the same.

    2. Remembering a quote from IF, “Thankfully, once a venin is killed, the wyvern they created will die also.”

When Berwyn was unconscious on the ground and X considered killing him, “… I wonder how many initiates feel the same about their sage.” Beyond the physical impossibility of it…”

I wonder if Xaden can’t kill Berwyn because it would effectively kill himself? Makes me wonder if there is a deeper connection between initiates and the sages/mavens who mentor them… Perhaps a strategy of “mutually assured destruction?”

      1. Well that’s a horror thought right there. I haven’t considered this. Ugh!

  8. In one of the epigraphs in OS from Lyra’s diary talks about Braxton from Tyrrendor being one of the first six and how one of the first six is already venin.

    1. If I’m to be court-martialed for helping Braxtyn defend his people, then I
shall welcome the trial. All who channel from dragon and gryphon alike
should flourish under the wards, and now Aretia will be that haven should
one of the others ever return.
      —–
Do you read this as Braxtyn being one of the six?
