Onyx Storm Theory: Who is actually missing at the end?

I read the last chapters over and over, to such an extent that I think I might be able to recite them back to you. I think maybe my job should have been that of a researcher or something similar, seeing as I love doing this for fun.

The question in Onyx Stom is who is missing at the end. If we figure out who is missing at the end, we can figure out who turned venin. Rebecca Yarros said to pay attention to who is missing at the end. Now, she didn’t say in the last chapter. Nor did she say at the Battle of Draithus. Because the issue is that there are different people missing.

So let’s play back and recreate the timeline to see who is actually missing at the end.

Who is part of the Iron Squad? Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing?

Violet Sorrengail, Imogen Cardulo, Quinn Hollis, Rhiannon Matthias, Sawyer Henrick, Ridoc Gamlyn, Sloane Mairi, Aaric Greycastle, Avalynn, Baylor, Lynx. We also have Catriona Cordella, Maren Zina, Bragen, Neve, Trager and Kai.

We subtract Trager since luck took him from us. We add Xaden, Garrick and Bodhi since they are central characters as well.

Avalynn has manifested fire, Baylor has manifested farsight, Lynx has manifested shadows and Aaric is a precog.

Alright, I believe now we have all the information we need to begin the timeline.

Chapter 59

Sloane gives Brennan a little more power than he needed. There is the odd observation about the lack of a mark on Dain’s wrist and Brennan’s neck, but she notices a mark on his palm.

Brennan LOOKS at Violet and as far as we know, there is no red around his eyes. At least Violet doesn’t seem to notice anything.

Brennan takes Mira and heads towards Marbh.

Xaden leaves. Violet remains with Bodhi behind.

Chapter 60

Teine doesn’t seem to wake. Tairn leaves with Teine to take him behind the wards.

We realise that Bodhi’s signet does not work on Theo. Cuir forcefully removed Bodhi from the field.

Chapter 61 and Chapter 62

I believe these two chapters are happening simultaneously.

Imogen and Quinn are together protecting Draithus. Violet is battling Theo. Rhi sees Tairn take Teine to safety.

With Rhi we take stock of Cat, Maren, Sawyer and Ridoc.

At this moment in time, we know that both Riorson and Durran were spotted near the city walls.

The first years are pulling the civilians to safety but not in the battle. We know that Baylor is there using his farsight. He sees 17 wyverns. Against three dragons (Rhi, Sawyer and Ridoc) and four gryphons (Cat, Maren, Bragen and Neve)

Out of 17 wyverns, 7 get away. Cat, Maren, Bragen and Neve each kill one. Three are left to tackle.

How do I know that these two chapters are happening at the same time? Because we just saw from Rhi’s POV that dragons and gryphons fill the sky against wyverns just as Violet notices. Also, Tairn’s still out of reach. In Rhi’s POV we just saw him taking Teine to safety.

Xaden is in combat and Sgaeyl comes to help Violet. The Spare (Aaric) brings the advance party from Zehyllna.

Violet wields over and over and over to kill as many wyverns as humanly possible.

This is where this particular timeline “ends” so to speak.

I believe that the next chapters also happen simultaneously from this moment onward! We have a mix of Imogen, Violet and Xaden’s POV but all three chapters happen at the very same time.

Chapter 63, Chapter 64 and Chapter 65

So here it goes. Imogen states, “There are still too many wyverns despite the inhuman amount Sorrengail just dispatched” – further reiterating that we’re continuing the timeline now.

“and where the fuck is Riorson?” – He’s already been summoned. Sgaeyl is not sharing information with Tairn either. He’s already in the canyon, right?

“I haven’t seen a trace of a shadow in the last twenty minutes.” – So for the last 20 minutes, Sgaeyl withdrew from Tairn, Violet dispatched all those wyverns, and Xaden essentially…disappeared. It’s fair to assume, indeed, he’d been summoned. And if that’s the case, he is already there, in the canyon with Panchek and his new brother!

So from Imogen’s POV, we know where Felix is. We know where Garrick is. We know where Aetos is and we can account for Bodhi.

“where Felix works beside cases of alloy-hilted daggers”

“Where are you going?” I shout at Garrick’s back. “I can’t walk again. Even if I made it to Aretia, I’d never be strong enough to get back,” he calls over his shoulder. “So, I’d better find some fucking way to do something.”

This is tricky:

“Then I make my way back inside, slip Quinn’s last dagger from her thigh sheath, and reach for Glane. […] Outside, the sky darkens further.”

We can interpret this as she goes inside, then she immediately goes outside, and looks up at the sky. If that’s the case, then the sky is getting darker because Xaden had started his shadow show.

At this moment in time, we have a few missing people: after Rhi ordered a shield formation (in the previous chapter, so in the immediately preceding timeline), we do not know what happened to Ridoc, Sawyer, Neve, Bragen, or Rhi. We know that Aaric brought the infantry, so technically he’d been accounted for. We assume Brennan is still at the top of the pass. We have not touched on Sloane, Lynx, Baylor, Avalynn and Kai. We assume that the first years are being kept safe by helping civilians at the top of the pass.

Now moving to Violet’s POV, which happens at the very same time as Imogen’s and Xaden’s, we feel the roar of unfettered agony. Sgaeyl, it is assumed, is being brought down by the net. This again explains why Imogen hadn’t seen Xaden for 20 minutes. He was in the canyon, summoned. So far the timeline checks.

Tairn is also under the net at this point.

Xaden’s POV shows us, again, the same timeline. Again, we “felt” the agonising pain, assuming that when the wyvern bit Sgaeyl and then the net hit her.

Xaden says: “Violet will free Tairn. That’s the only outcome I allow to exist.” -> Again, same timeline, just as Tairn is under the net too. All this is happening in parallel.

Which means, at this very moment, Xaden is already seeing his new brother. But from the parallel timelines, we know it is not Aetos since he was with Imogen, not Garrick as she’d literally just seen him, or Bodhi, seeing as Imogen saw him retching on all fours.

So who is unaccounted for? Well, again, we have no idea what happened to Rhi’s half a squad. We have no idea where Brennan is. Is he still tending to Mira and Teine? Is Aaric in combat or not?

Then we have the line that gets all confused: now that my Sage has another sibling he can use against me. Sibling. It still tells us that sibling means the new venin has a brother or sister and not that they are Xaden’s new sibling. Because later on, Xaden still refers to the new venin as his new brother.

“To my new brother […]How could he do this? Choose this after watching me stumble and fall over the last five months.”

This is another problem. Who has known since December 21st? Garrick, Bodhi and Imogen.

We know that Ridoc, Sawyer, Rhi and Jesinia found out sometime in March (March twenty-eighth is the last day of the interrogation after the return from the isle and immediately after Battle Brief, Ridoc and Violet tell the rest what’s going on -> Xaden is venin).

We know that at the end of March (last day of March, to be precise, when Felix comes to Basgiath to train Violet; it’s also Xaden’s bday!)

Chapter 46: “Three weeks later.” Puts us roughly on the third week of April. “Are we still leaving for Aretia the day after tomorrow?”

Then there is conversation that the wards have a month at most. At this rate, they’ll reach the city walls in a matter of weeks.

So it’s roughly the end of April with chapter 48. Also, they are in Aretia for two weeks. That’s what Violet says. They will stay until roughly mid May, right, with their rotation of two weeks.

We also know that it’d been seventy-six days since Xaden channelled in Deverelli. So our timeline is correct. Sometimes end of April, beginning of May. This is when Leothan fires the wards. Andarna leaves, and for the next 3 days, Violet doesn’t leave her room. On the fourth morning, Mira comes to visit. Still we’re at the beginning of May.

At chapter 55, we have 2 days pass without Mira telling anyone. The squad is still in Aretia, so it’s not mid May quite yet. And there we have it, Theo asks for Jack and the big battle happens.

So yeah, The Battle of Draithus is sometimes just before mid May. Which means, we’re looking at either Bodhi or Garrick, right? Seeing as Ridoc and Sawyer had found out not even two months prior.

Who is the variable here? Brennan. Brennan knows. But when did Brennan find out? We do not know. We just know that at the end of April he came out and told Violet that he know about Xaden.

Alright, who is actually missing at the very end of the book?

Five riders missing. Four now that Violet is there with them. Xaden is one of the missing as per the comments “But after that display, we all know Riorson did this. I bet the other three are already dead.”

So that’s three riders missing (well four, but one of them is Riorson) Tavis is one of them too. “I haven’t seen him since yesterday,” she says, her voice low, almost monotone. “Lieutenant Tavis?” “Among the missing,”

So another TWO missing, two unknowns.

Brennan is here, clearly not missing. But apart from Brennan, well, as far as we’re concerned, everyone else is.

So…a little bit back to square 1. If you like fun theories, we go with the idea that Brennan turned. If you go with who is missing at the end…technically, Garrick is missing at the very end.

Share that Venin and Wyvern are real!

  1. Ok, good.
I think Aaric is missing, Aaric is the new “brother”, another sibling that I think knew about Xaden because of his signet. Soooo, I bet on Aaric.

  2. Hi Cory, the problem is we don’t know who else is missing. We know about Xaden, Garrick and we can assume Panchek. In total four persons are missing. It could be literally and means Garrick is missing. But as you have analysed, we don’t know what Ridoc and Sawyer did. If the timeline is correct Garrick couldn’t be the one with Xaden. And it is irritating that in English Xaden said he has a new sibling in German it is a new brother. It is still confusing. I had another thought but probably this is to far in speculation. What if another person who has seen Xaden the last five month has turned. E.g. Lewellen. I suppose we won’t solve this puzzle until we get book 4. It is like it was with Violets second signet.

    1. I don’t think we are meant to know. It could be anyone.
      This is in english:

“The bond between Berwyn and me is the kind that should never exist, and now that my Sage has another sibling he can use against me…I’m screwed.”

But then, he calls his new brother, brother. “I glance past Berwyn, past Sgaeyl and the venin, to my new brother and the unconscious dragon lying in the valley beyond the canyon, guarded by
seven wyvern. How could he do this?”

So we know it’s a HE that turned. The fact that he uses the term sibling can mean one of two things:
      – it’a a massive family with venin women and venin men, and he says the sage has a new sibling to use against me. Meh, weak argument to be fair.
      – Xaden means he has another sibling to use against him as in, the guy who turned has siblings. And who do we always refer to with siblings? Violet and her siblings.

  3. I think if you looks at it from what causes the most pain and angst (like writers tend to love), it’s going to be Garrick. We are much more invested in him, because that brings Imogen into the mix, and we have gotten to see much more of her and get to know her better and are more emotionally attached.

I don’t think we are all that invested in Bodhi, he seems a bit more of a side character, development-wise.

The other Drama Llama choice would be Aaric. Oh no, the only royal with a brain has now turned Venin, because his precog said that’s how it needs to happen!

I didn’t think about Brennan, because he was still in charge at the end, but it’s possible he’s the new Venin as well.

    1. I’m afraid I must agree. Garrick appears to be the obvious choice, though I find it quite distressing due to the many implications. Imogen is likely to suffer—her boyfriend has just died, and now the one she loves is turning Venin before she has had the chance to express her true feelings. It’s simply heartbreaking.

At the same time, I suspect that Violet and Imogen will grow increasingly close, which seems inevitable given that both have lost someone dear, and now their partners are undergoing this change. Their shared grief might well forge an unexpectedly strong bond.

Lastly, while Aaric makes a compelling case for Venin, I sincerely hope that this option is ultimately ruled out.

  4. I really think it’s Garrick.

RY said re: what to think about for the new venin brother that readers should pay attention to “Who’s missing at the end…to someone who feels like whatever they have been given is not enough…which is what always happens when you turn venin. When you turn venin its because you need to reach for power beyond your own; you weren’t given enough power.” (I wonder if she initially had the identity in the book and had to cut for length and doesn’t care if readers know who it is at this point?)

I think lots of evidence points to Garrick especially in Imogen’s POV Chapter.

She says “Felix knows about Garrick. Gods, he has to be nearing burnout at this point.” (aka not enough power)

Right after Quinn dies (sad) she says “I stare at the other side of the staircase, locked in the memory, watching as the stones being to pale, then lose their color one by one, each loss higher than the last. …, and color disappears from the stones in the bend beneath us so gradually that I can’t help but wonder if Quinn simply took the color with her.”

AND THEN moments later Garrick shows up. (He does go on to say there are a bunch of venin on the city walls draining the stone. So maybe it’s not him…or that’s an easy excuse?)

She notes about Garrick “I notice the circles beneath his beautiful eyes, the unusual pallor of his complexion.” Venin pale??? (I know he could just be tired)

Next paragraph also mentions how “the landing beneath us loses its color” while Garrick is carrying them. (Thus he is touching the stone that is turning)

Then when Imogen asks him where he’s going he says “I can’t walk again. Even if I made it to Aretia, I’d never be strong enough to get back,” … “So I’d better find some fucking way to do something.” (Flat out saying he doesn’t have enough power)

And the part about how they confirm he is legit missing at the very end.

    1. Well he does check out to be fair. He is missing, he’s always been Xaden’s right hand. He just wanted to help.
It’s just awful that he’s venin. It really breaks my heart because I love Garrick so much and I feel like we’re barely discussing him…I suppose also points to never being enough since he doesn’t get enough “screen time” in the book either.
The only counter I have to your discoloration is that Imogen does look into his eyes and she confirms they are hazel. No red to be seen. So I do think there are venin around.
But that doesn’t mean he didn’t turn minutes later

  5. Hey,
Interesting take. But I personally think Bodhi is the new brother.
It is not explicitly said he is missing at the end but, I think he is one of them.
On page 521 it is said ” the unconscious dragon lying in the valley” What dragen could it be? Half a page later ” Berwyn stabs deep between the dragons scales and it desiccates, GREEN draining from its scales”
WHO has a GREEN dragon? BODHI. The dragon is/ was Cuir and Berwyn killed him.
Bodhi is the only one that fits. He is one of the few that saw Xaden struggle for months, has a green dragon and is most likly among the missing.
Also why would Xaden suddenly marry Violet and give her Tyrrendor? He spent weeks showing Bodhi how to act as his replacement, teaching him to take over. Why suddenly switch to Violet if not because Bodhi is no longer “available”?

    1. I agree that Bodhi fits best. I’m just wondering if RY made it so easy for us 😀

    2. Panchek’s dragon is also green…

  6. I feel even though Bodhi isn’t a “main character” he could easily be one to have turned as well.
Xaden’s desperate need to marry Violet could be a sign that the second in line to Tyrrendor has also turned.

As for the one whose seen him suffer for the past 5 months, it’s Garrick. The only time they were apart was when they were touring the Isles looking for the Irids

    1. I honestly think it’s Garrick and I just can’t deal…

  7. Hello !
Great work on the time line. I have some problems though. I do not find it that clear that Imogen’s time line is the same as for Xaden and Violet (which I do believe are the same). Moreover this would indicate that neither Garrick nor Bodhi are the new “brother”.

Now RY does leave hints and clues (often obscure to be sure and only understood much later) but not voluntarily gives falls directions that I have seen. There is no hint that Aaric would want to turn. On the contrary he is stated as not wanting power.

For Garrick we have a few hints.
    1) He is Xaden right-hand always by his side.
    2) The quote “I can’t walk again. Even if I made it to Aretia, I’d never be strong enough to get back,” Chap. 63, P. 752.
But we also have : Garrick to Imogen :”I’m not leaving you, Imogen” Chap. 63, p. 751

Fo Bodhi we have tones of hints.
    1) The fact that he is always complaining that he is left behind (many times). Theophanie to Bohdi : “Tell me, do you not grow tired of being a less-powerful version of your cousin?” Chap.60, p.713.
    2) He states that he will always stay by Xaden’s side under any circumstance. “I’m doing exactly what I’ve always wanted—protecting my cousin, my province.” Chap. 60, p.713.
    3) Bodhi is on his hands and knees across the town square, retching. Chap. 63, p.752.
    4) Bodhi’s Dragon is Cuir a green Dragon. And a green Dragon is captured and killed by Berwyn Chap. 65, p; 766.

So assuming that RY does not voluntarily give falls directions, this would all point to Bodhi. True maybe it is too obvious. But is it that obvious to the casual reader ?

If we look further. I think plot-wise it would be much more interesting if it is Bodhi. He would certainly be a great danger for the humans and Dragons. But there is Bodhi’s (known) signet that counters others signet. In chapter 60 trying it against Theophanie he says “it’s working” while Violet says “it’s not”. The way this is written seems very strange. Especially since we know that signets improve with time and practice. This could be a very interesting thing in the sequel.

  8. It’s obviously Holden, Xaden and Holden are now and forever Eskimo brothers a bond not easily broken.

  9. Agree! I think between Garrick and Bodhi, it has to be Bodhi, with Garrick serving as the red herring. From an overall storytelling perspective, I don’t think we need another woman in love with a venin weakening/copying the X/V storyline.

I always thought the vomit thing was such a strange addition…unless Bodhi accidentally channeled and had a visceral reaction to it?

Sidenote: I thought the green dragon killed was Pancheck’s…guess I’ll be reading that chapter again!

    1. I thought so too! I also think the green belonged to Panchek.

  10. Yes, Pancheck has a green dragon and the way it’s written, it really sounds like it’s his dragon as Xaden knows Pancheck will die then Berwyn kills the green. Every time I think I know who the brother is, I hear a really good theory supporting another candidate. I’ve heard great theories for all the top three, Bodhi, Garrick, and Aaric. My only extra sway toward Garricks is this line from FW, “I see Xaden and Garrick leaned up against the wall of the academic building like gods surveying their domain.” Violet often refers to Xaden as god like, and naturally we thought of their 6 gods, but could this have been foreshadowing towards becoming venin since now know venin think themselves as gods? With that quote including Garrick makes me wonder. I’d that for Imogen, because whoever the brother is, sure feels like they won’t make it out alive.

  11. Hey,
I do think, that it comes down to Garrick or Bodhi. These are the only two “he”s who knew “for five months”. I’m assuming that Xaden only told Brennan, when he resigned from his professorship and returned to Aretia. When Violet got there, Brennan told her, that he tried everything, and I think he said “in the last few days”, or something along those lines. So i do believe that Brennan only knew since shortly before Violet got there (End of April?)
Also, RY said in one of the interviews that we should pay attention to who’s missing at the end, but she also said, that it’s someone who thought he needed more power, or something like that.
That doesn’t really help, because it could apply to both Garrick and Bodhi:
    – Garrick used all of hos power to walk over and over and that was maye the trigger
    – Bodhi’s struggle with having a seemingly rather less useful signet (Theophanie even said something like “how does ist feel to be the less powerful” after his cousin), and his struggle with being excluded and “left behind” because Xaden wants him safe, because of him being first in line. There were many instances where Bodhi appeared upset or angry and him wanting to be useful. He said that he and Cuir are still deadly in the air, even if is signet is not.

About the stabed dragon: I was asolutely sure while reading, that it must have been Pancheks dragon, because he was standing beside him.
When Xaden mentioned his “new sibling” he mentioned also an unconcious dragon. I believe that there are two dragons, the stabbed one and the unconcious one.

In the end, I think that is Garrick. I would believe that if it would have been Bodhi, Xaden might possibly have said something more like “how could he do this to Tyrrendor/me/us” whatever. Or at least I would wonder why he wouldn’t, if it was Bodhi.

  12. Hey,

first: thanks a lot for all the work you’ve done here Cory! Great theories!! And thanks for all the input from all others here. Love reading the page.

I was re-reading all the books over the last weeks and I would also go with Bodhi.
Besides all the points made so far, especially because what happens in chapter 60, when his signet is not working against Theo

“My signet is always the balance” Bodhi argues… “I can stop her!”
“You can’t!” (Violet says) “Your signet must only work on our magic, not theirs….”

This last argument kind of caught me > he obviously wants to be a balance. Becoming aware that his signet is not working against venin, his thoughts/idea could be:

Turning venin himself would (maybe) help to ‘change’ his signet (it would then start to work properly against venin) so he could fight them from the inside (like he sees Xaden doing)

    1. Thank you for your warm words. I agree, I think him changing might simply make it that he can counter venin.

  13. I think there is one important point that makes it more likely that it’s Bodhi and not Garrick: The books point out constantly the concept of “balance”: When there is a venin with a certain signet, the same signet appears among the riders (e.g. the new shadow wielder after Xaden turns, Lillith Sorrengail as balance for Theo). However, there is already a venin distance-wielder! One of Theo’s henchman who saves her when the wards go up near the temple of Dunne! So it seems plausible that Garrick is the answer to balance this venin. Now, he likely could still turn and then simply two distance wielders would appear among the riders. But it seems a bit cumbersome and unelegant from a writer’s perspective. The book also goes great lengths to assure us that Garrick, while having many reasons to, does not want to turn: He assures Imogen that he would stay with her, and it is pointed out that his eye color is NOT turning red, when the city’s walls get drained. It also does not make sense for him to drain the city walls and then complain about burning out.

On the other hand, there is likely no venin with Bodhi’s signet. It would have been incredibly strong for them and it does not make sense that they didn’t use it on Violet when she is the riders’ best weapon against the venin forces. It is also pointed out constantly that he feels not strong enough, wants to help Xaden, and does not really care about becoming king. There are also two sus moments at the end of the book that could have a deeper meaning: He thinking his signet works against Theo, while it apparantly does not, and him being sick in the city. I think it’s save to say that it’s unclear what’s really going on with him in both scenes. Maybe he absorbed some of the venin power from Theo and didn’t take it well without turning? Maybe his dragon was dying? But I doubt that the two scenes were added without purpose. Finally, it would give Xaden all the more reason to marry Violet to secure the throne, which was very important for him (I still think he wanted to marry her far earlier anyway). Ultimately, Bodhi turning also makes for more interesting possible story lines because his signet is so unique, adding a counter to Violet even after she masters her signet.

    1. I think that Bodhi might have a second signet as well that we don’t know yet. Violet once asked him in Iron Flame an he replied something like “I have no second signet, same as Xaden has no” (and we know Xaden has). So if he’s the “new brother” that might become relevant

  14. Ok, hear me out. We’re all assuming that when Rebecca said, “look out for who’s missing at the end,” we immediately think about who’s missing in the last chapter, but what if she means who’s missing in general? How can it be Bohdi or Garrick when they are seen by Imogen while Xaden is already with his new brother? The one person we seem to not know where he is during the whole battle is Brennan! We see him briefly with Teirn, I think, but that’s it! What if he’s the new brother and is masking it in the last chapter?

There is also one sentence that’s driving me crazy. On page 766, Panchek says to Berwyn: “I’m the only one who can give you access to your son.” Who the hell is this son? Is it like the Venin are all siblings and the Sage is the father, or are they really related? I don’t think Panchek is talking about Xaden since he has no authority over him, so is it a student at Bargiath? Does anyone else have a theory here?
