What is Garrick Tavis' signet

Updated: Garrick Tavis is our distance wideler. And while our reader was onto something here with Chradh (meaning map), the theory was almost there. Garrick has a second signet and he’s an air wielder and a distance wielder aka a walker.

This incredible theory is brought to you by one of our readers, Elizaveta Vinogradova. And let me tell you, she’s onto something because Garrick is awesome and we’re all wondering what is Garrick’s signet?

Not that long ago we learned about Bodhi in Iron Flame and he’s pretty badass too. But what about Garrick?

Elizaveta has ideas. Let’s hear them!

Garrick Tavis’ signet is…

Garrick Tavis is Xaden Riorson`s best friend since childhood.

Weapon of choice: double swords strapped across his back, similar to Xaden.
Xaden considers him the best fighter out of all the Marked Ones, though he’s not as patient as Imogen. However, Xaden and Garrick are equally matched when they spar and Xaden’s speed gives him an advantage.
The multitude of patches on Garricks fighting uniform also denote his skills with a variety of weapons and hand-to-hand combat.

Garrick connected to the brown scorpion tail dragon( Chradh). The dragon is incredibly sensitive to runes. It helps him to find objects marked by them.
There is no mention about Garrick’s signet.
At the meeting with fans Yarros was asked a question:

“If you were on a deserted island, who would you like to be with?
She answered: “With Garrick, and you don’t even know why”.

I wondered, what is Garrick’s signet?
The name of his dragon is Chradh.

In Scottish Gaelic, Chradh’s name would mean “pain.”

However, it would be spelled as “cradh.”
Let’s play anagrams.
First thing that strikes me in the eye.

Chradh -> CARD

Given this, his dragon functions like a tracker, capable of locating objects with runes, along with the confession from Yarros.

This leads us to believe that Garrick’s Tavis signet acts as both a map and a compass.

He possesses extensive knowledge about any region he is in. With him, you will never get lost. That signet is incredibly useful in war and combat.”

Fan find evidence of Garrick being a compass

Emily said: I love this theory, and I think it is backed up by a comment in Iron Flame when they return to Basgaith after war games.

Ridoc says “There was also the rumor that you got lost. But considering who you were with , we were all betting on the dead theory.” I initially thought he was referring to the fact they were all with Xaden, but having read your theory it would be unlikely they were lost if Garrick is a compass!

My conclusion

I mean I think it would make a lot of sense. But of course, we know that signets are representative of who people are at their very core.

On one level, I don’t love the idea of Garrick inflicting pain in anyone. Or having a pain related fate in the cards. So I am all for Chradh being actually related to maps.

I do think Garrick’s signet is incredible and will help everyone progress further in their fight against venin.

My opinion has always been that Garrick can somehow inflict or alleviate pain, given the name of his dragon. What are yout thoughts?

Share that Venin and Wyvern are real!

  1. hiii! I love to read these theories, even tho I’m not capable of making them by myself lol. I just have a question.

Do dragons’ name change? For example, Tairn’s name means Thunder, (if I remember correctly) which would totally make sense since Violet can wield lighting, but did he have another name when Naolin was his rider?

Idk if u understand what I mean, it’s really late here on my timezone and I’m kinda tired lol

(srry if I mispronounced anything, xoxo)

    1. That’s a valid question! No, the dragons names do not change. They are as they are.
I think it’s just for us to know hints to their riders’ signets but don’t need to be

    1. Oh this is such a gooooood point! Woah

    2. You are right, I also thought it was about Xaden. I’m going to add your comment to the article. Fantastic find.

  3. Also, Garrick is Xaden’s right hand and in Xaden’s pov he often both gives advice and plays devil’s advocate (like when asking if he’s sure about taking Violet to Arethia, not saying it’s wrong but evidencing the risks).
Being a compass *would* express who he needs to be! Really nice theory!

    1. I agree! Maybe he is more than just a compass indeed, but a moral compass too. And given that Xaden is a morally gray character, as you said yourself, having Garrick as a “compass” and as a right hand would make a lot of sense! LOVE this Gloria!
