It took me about a day and a half of non-stop reading, but I finished the book, and I’m ready to discuss Onyx Storm with you. It’s no secret that I love the Empyrean series—I mean, I have an entire website dedicated to it! I adored Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, so I was incredibly curious about what Onyx Storm would bring to the table. Interestingly, Rebecca Yarros has mentioned that this is her favorite book in the series. So, does it live up to the hype?
Let’s dive into Onyx Storm. I’m sure you’re as eager as I am to discuss the third book in the Empyrean series.
Non-Spoiler Review of Onyx Storm: ★★★★★ (5/5 stars)
Onyx Storm is a joy to read—well-written, fast-paced, and fluid. While it’s an excellent book, I must admit that, as Rebecca Yarros hinted, your first love tends to remain unparalleled. For me, Fourth Wing still holds that title.
The story picks up by addressing many of the lingering questions left from Fourth Wing and Iron Flame. I loved how it didn’t drag these out unnecessarily, I can now revisit my Iron Flame theories and celebrate the ones that turned out to be spot on.
Beyond tying up loose ends, Onyx Storm expands the world significantly, offering adventure and travel, a personal favorite element in fantasy books. In part, the travels in the story felt inspired by Yarros’s own recent journeys with her family (based on her Instagram posts). While that’s just my speculation, it added an extra layer of intrigue for me.
Violet’s Evolution and the Supporting Cast
Violet Sorrengail’s growth is palpable in this book. She’s more resilient, mature, and confident, transforming from the fragile, scared girl who crossed the parapet in Fourth Wing into a fierce, strategic woman who declares that she will outsmart you if you mess with the people she love. Yet, despite this evolution, she retains her kindness and selflessness, willing to sacrifice herself for those she holds dear.
The supporting cast also gets richer character development. While some characters from Iron Flame take a backseat here (surprisingly so), others step into the spotlight alongside Violet and Xaden. The book is brimming with explosive plotlines, but it ultimately revolves around two key goals: saving Xaden (which isn’t a spoiler—it’s been heavily hinted by Yarros herself) and uncovering more about Violet’s past.
Dragons, Twists, and Relationships
As expected, Andarna takes center stage again. Yarros delivers on her promise, giving us more insight into the adorable yet formidable dragon. The narrative reads more like an action-packed adventure, with constant threats lurking around every corner.
The evolving relationship between Violet and Xaden is another highlight. Xaden’s character gains more depth as we uncover facets of his history and psyche. Yes, he’s morally gray, but his unwavering loyalty to those he loves is why we adore him. Plus, let’s be real, the man is undeniably hot.
Final Thoughts and Cliffhanger Alert
Onyx Storm is fast-paced and never dull. Every scene pulses with action, and the subtext invites countless theories. It’s a wild ride, quite literally. The ending leaves us with another cliffhanger, though not as jaw-dropping as Iron Flame’s. While it leaves plenty of unanswered questions, the conclusion feels slightly less shocking, giving readers a chance to savor the story without immediate heartbreak. At least, until you start reading my theories about it. If Mrs Yarros was kind enough to not spill it out for you and break your heart…wait until you read what I have to say.
For me, Onyx Storm edges past Iron Flame. It’s been a 5/5 read, and I’m bursting with theories that I can’t wait to share with you all.
