Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 62

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first. Please note that some spoilers from future chapters will be found here.

The epigraph is a fantastic Easter egg.
“There is no goddess more wrathful than Dunne. Entering Her temple will slice the soul from any attendant who has shunned Her grace.”

But so much to unpack here. Dunne is the most wrathful. When referring to Dunne, we use a capital H for Her. Slice the soul from any attendant. Does this mean that, no matter what they say, venin still have a soul?

Back to Violet.

“Bone crunches as her head snaps back, her body rolling with it.” [..] “Shit!” “That’s never going to straighten out!”

Hmmm… interesting observation. Do you remember when Mira broke Brennan’s nose and he said that mending oneself is a pain in the ass? I wonder if there’s a connection here.

Then Theo says this:
“Which meant a lot more when you had your irid.”
Why did it mean a lot more when she had her irid? Why was Andarna special for the venin?

And Theo is excellent at reading Violet. She knows where to press. I must wonder: how many signets does Theo have? It reminds me so much of Varrish, how he could tell other people’s weaknesses.

“Not in the way you want.” She tilts her head. “We’re excellent actors, but our kind doesn’t feel what you call love.” […] “Now that I know where you’re vulnerable, we can begin.”

I guess it’s time to learn a little more about venin.

Lesson 1: They too can be drained. Occupying ground that has already had its magic repurposed creates a barrier.

I guess there was no more time to learn more lessons, as Sgaeyl takes Violet from that field and passes her to Tairn in a swift motion.

And just as we get Tairn, we learn that Teine is alive under Brennan’s care at the top of the pass. It’s good to know where everyone is, for the purpose of our timeline.

And then this makes me wonder:

“Why would riders develop farsight if you can see that clearly, anyway?” I ask.
“The privilege of our sight is afforded to few,” he comments.

Is this what happened between Aotrom and Ridoc? Aotrom allowed Ridoc to see that far? And that begs the question for Liam.

We also learn about more riders around—again, for the purpose of our timeline: Glane (and Imogen), Cath (and Dain), and Cuir (with Bodhi). We have brief eyes on them all.

But where is Xaden? We do not know. Tairn just said she has withdrawn from him.

Violet and Tairn do what they do best as a team. Violet kills many wyvern thanks to her incredible signet, but as we know, magic does like all things in balance. She is burning up, and she needs a break. Give Violet a few years and she really will become the most dangerous and powerful rider.

We learn where Aaric and Molvic were all this time. He brings the advance party from Zehyllna.

We have the following information so far:
“Where are Xaden and Sgaeyl?
I reach through the bond, only to be met with a wall of black ice.
Cuir disappears into the fray above the city, and my breath stutters. […]
Glane launches toward Cuir despite the order to shelter.”

Violet follows the plan and keeps to her objective: Theophanie.
