Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 45

In case we forgot about the nightmares, they are back! “Reaching for the city walls of Draithus.” Isn’t it interesting that in every single one of these nightmares, it looks like we just find out what’s about to happen? In Iron Flame, the dream takes place when the ground is frozen, just like in December at Basgiath. The Sage tells them that the longest night is yet to pass.

Do the venin have a precog within their ranks, and the Sage unknowingly puts this into the dreams?

“The next flash of lightning reflects in the emeralds adorning the top of the hilt.”

The emerald. What other swords have these particular stones? As far as we know, only the dagger of Aretia and the sword of Tyrrendor.

Here’s another thing: “Wisps of silver hair.” Not gray, not white. SILVER!

“The sword of Tyrrendor rushes toward my chest.”

There! We have confirmation that it’s the same sword. Was the Sage part of Tyrrendor at some point?

“It’s the end of March. I’ve barely had my powers for a year. The last day of March.”

Whooho! We have the official date of Xaden Riorson’s birth. Our handsome man is celebrating his birthday on March 31st.

“Sometimes I forget just how nearly perfect Bodhi is at everything.”

Nearly perfect. But he’s no Xaden. Is this a clue that Rebecca Yarros was telling us about? To pay attention to those who may feel inadequate?

I honestly don’t have much to add about the maneuver with the dragons, except for the fact that Tairn and Violet are always going to be… well… different. But I do think this is going to make for a pretty cool scene in the TV series.

Two things to note here:

Lynx comes up with a face full of mud and a broken nose.”

We don’t love Lynx. He has nothing on Xaden. He is meant to die, no doubt. Sorry, Lynx.

Aaric lands twenty feet from the projection without breaking a sweat, but instead of rushing the target, he whirls toward Xaden and Kaori and hurls a palm-sized axe.”

Message received, Aaric. Do not cut off one head of the beast. Cut off THE beast.

Happy Birthday, Xaden Riorson!

He receives a gorgeous wrist cuff, and can we take a moment to just hang onto this very moment:

“When things get… shitty, I hope you can look down at it and imagine us sitting there together when this is all over. That’s the vision I’m going to cling to: you and me, holding hands, looking over the city.”

I don’t know if Rebecca Yarros is going to kill us all with a sad ending, but when things get shitty, maybe we need to imagine this very moment… Maybe that was the author’s way of telling us that we will be okay and that’s the ending of the series. A beautiful, calm one.

“Forty-seven days.” He searches my eyes and lets his breath go. “That’s how long it’s been since I channeled from the alloy in Deverelli.”

Again, I think the only reason why we need to pay attention to this is because of timelines.

“I do hate Basgiath.” He scratches the silver cloud of his beard.

Felix also has silver in his beard. Again, not white, not gray. His sibling Suri also has silver in her hair. And a giant emerald on her finger…

Well, we are nearing the end of the book, so I guess this is the time to realize that the wards in Aretia are failing. And they have about a month until they are done.

The war is coming!
