Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 56

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first. Please note that some spoilers from future chapters will be found here.

The chapter opens with a shared nightmare between Xaden and Violet. First, let’s see what happens. Violet realises she is in Xaden’s dream. Her realisation means she is honing her signet. She is becoming detached from Xaden.

I take his ice-cold hand in mine, then startle. I can feel that.
“Why can’t you escape this place? What keeps you here?”

She can feel Xaden in his dreams. So much to unpack here. I think this is foreshadowing for Book 4, where we will have to keep them apart for whatever reason. I think Xaden and Violet will be able to be together in their dreams. I also find it interesting that she can feel others—meaning she can harm them too. She can get inside their minds and do things to them. Finally, why is Xaden kept in this nightmare? I feel like this is our cue that the Sage is, without a shadow of a doubt, a dream walker.

The Sage pulls back the hood of his maroon robe, revealing the freakishly young face.

Freakishly young face. Also, maroon robe. Not red, not blue, and not purple. He is different from Theo.

There is honestly so, so much packed into these short paragraphs.

“Or should I call you dream-walker?”
My lips part. Xaden’s nightmares are eerily on point.
“We should go,” I whisper.
“He can’t.” The Sage’s smile widens, and he lifts his bony hand. Xaden rises and claws at his throat.
“Wake up!” I shout at Xaden.
“I told you, he can’t. And here I’d hoped you’d be a quick learner. How disappointing.”

He cannot wake up because the Sage keeps him there. The Sage is a dream walker. Violet can come and go as she pleases—assuming she cannot be controlled by another dream walker. Also meaning she cannot control the Sage either. Magic likes all things in balance, right?

And here’s another interesting point:

“Stop. This is a dream. It isn’t real. He isn’t losing air.”

That’s not true: Xaden.
His spine is arched beside me, his head thrown back in pain as he strains for the very air he’s breathing.

Want more proof that the Sage is a dream walker too?

“It’s simple, dream-walker. You come or she dies.”

He is actively communicating with them via Xaden’s dreams. The Sage is 100% a dream walker.

“Maybe the power’s gone, but the ability still remains.”

And now we probably know how so many venin still kept their signets. Some of them were probably riders at one point—gifted their ability—and kept it after their dragon died or perished. Is this how Violet kept her gift even though Andarna is gone?

We don’t know of any rider who survived losing their dragons, right? It’s just Violet who lost Andarna and venin. And both venin and Violet have retained their signets.

The chapter ends with Garrick telling Xaden and Violet that Theophanie has Mira.

You come or she dies.
Isn’t that what the Sage said? Proof that, honestly, the Sage is our other dream walker…
