Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 57

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first. Please note that some spoilers from future chapters will be found here.

The beginning of the chapter is “hard” to read. Chaos—that’s how it feels. Everyone is at risk, and the war is at their doorstep. Brennan needs to do what he does best, and Violet needs to prioritise what’s important too. But of course, she’s only thinking of Mira.

“Panchek has already launched to request reinforcements.”
Call this an Easter egg for the end of the book.

“Melgren’s only seen the outcome of one path.” I glance at Xaden. “Which couldn’t have had three rebellion relics.”

I think this piece of information is very useful. Melgren is a partial precog. He has limitations, and he can only see outcomes of battles—but not outcomes of… life. A full precog can see it all. This leads me to believe that no path is set for them. Not yet.

We learn about the term “brother.” Again, I cannot stress enough the importance of this. Especially for the end of the book.

“What are you thinking?” I ask.
Venin don’t care about succession.”
You have another who calls you by the name,” Sgaeyl chimes in, her words sharper than her teeth.
“Another—” I frown. The only other person who would have qualified for that title was Liam. Wait. The very first time I met her, she didn’t kill me, but she didn’t achieve her rescue objective, either. My stomach hollows. “She wants Jack.”

Moving forward—if you remember—we’ve been training Violet a little for leadership. And now that she’s faced with difficult choices, we just learn what leadership is all about. Sacrifice, chess playing, and go pieces.

I think the next piece of information is the core of the series:

“That’s why we’ll fail. Because you will choose everyone over yourself, and he will choose you over everyone.”

We’ve talked so much about objectives, about paths. Every possible path. Tell me, Violet, did you choose this path yourself? Everything is leading to this very moment:

“One objective. One path.”
That’s meant for Violet.

The chapter ends with a reiteration from Brennan that Violet must follow her orders to the letter and force everyone else to focus on their own objective. We just don’t seem to be privy to Brennan’s idea… but something tells me, we’re about to find out.
