It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first.
Leave it to our girl Violet to find something positive about Xaden right away: Xaden can sense venin. So, there goes the theory that venin share a collective mind. That’s not quite it. However, I do think their ability to sense each other suggests a deep connection. And do you know who else can sense each other? Violet and Xaden. They use their bond to “feel” where the other is, even when shields are up.
The venin lady had silver hair, and the fact that Ridoc dismissed this so quickly really annoyed me. Ridoc! Sir! There’s a big difference between gray and silver, and Rebecca Yarros is always careful with these details. So, is Violet somehow related to that venin? Intriguing, right?
We finally hear Dain’s name. It’s nice to see he’s still around. I have so many questions about him. Will he turn out to be a nice guy or a terrible one? Sure, the dragons vouched for him, but let’s not forget that in Iron Flame, Cath smelled bad. Was that just proximity to Varrish? So many questions about Dain remain unanswered.
It’s good to see Sloane, too. I quite like how she avoids Violet’s eyes—it shows a sense of decency. While she came off as spoiled in Iron Flame, she’s clearly a decent human being with a conscience.
Chapter Five brings the much-anticipated squabble between Navarrian riders, Aretian riders, and the fliers. Honestly, it had to be Aura Beinhaven, right? In Iron Flame, it was clear her dragon is a coward who didn’t show her the “truth.” How she became a senior wingleader is beyond me. Naturally, she’s acting high and mighty, challenging riders and fliers alike.
When Violet tells Dain he’s needed, he doesn’t even hesitate. Wait—could Dain actually be shifting his arc again to become… useful and lovable?
Do you love the Codex? I do. It’s fascinating to learn their rules. They live and die by them—well, except when they bend them for convenience.
I still admire Dain for trying to deescalate the situation, even though he isn’t a wingleader or in command. How ungrateful is Navarre, though? These riders left to uncover the truth, then returned to help when needed, even bringing fliers. It’s heartbreaking—this mirrors real life too closely.
Oh, and I think we got an Easter egg here: There’s no way under Amari’s sky that I’m letting Aura harm any Aretian rider, let alone my oldest friend.
Amari’s sky—interesting, right? I have a feeling we’ll circle back to this. Isn’t Aretia home to one of the largest temples dedicated to Amari? Letting harm come to their riders would be a big mistake.
Why is this chapter important even though nothing significant happens? A few reasons:
- Dain seems legitimate (for now).
- Aaric is kind of cool with his odd sass—I like him.
- Violet’s incredible attention to detail. She notices what Aura’s doing and reacts before she can harm Aetos. Amazing observation skills. She’s been exhibiting this since Iron Flame. Could it be a secret signet? Some magic source? Or is she just this intuitive?
Most importantly, Violet is becoming assertive. She fiercely protects the ones she loves, even more than before.
