Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 14

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first.

Chapter 14 opens with a clear explanation as to why Violet made that comment that her relationship with Xaden just ended. Gosh, Rebecca Yarros knows how to do a cliffhanger even at the end of a chapter. I’m slowly crying, knowing what’s waiting for us at the end of Onyx Storm.

Luckily, Violet and Xaden are still together—just not openly. As expected, Violet goes to talk to Dain about the research she needs from General Aetos’ quarters.

I honestly think Rebecca Yarros is giving us another Easter egg here: “the quarters of Basgiath’s commanding general are warded so only their line, by blood or marriage, can pass through.

Bu blood, or marriage. Should someone marry a rider with these wards, they would have access. That’s useful to know I think.

I can’t stop thinking about this—“painted rendering of the First Six’s dragons. But not seven.” This begs the question: is it possible that the irids never bonded a human before? Maybe they powered the wards but then left? Is the reason everyone wanting an irid somehow tied to bonding with one? But why? Also, why are the journals of the first six wrong? Why does one of them talks about six dragons and the other about seven? Why is Warrick (of Luceras) so set on not mentioning Andarna? Is not like they had irids to pick from to raise more wards? So many questions here again.

Also, can we take a moment to dissect this piece of information? “I’ll obey Melgren’s order and give you the position, even though I think there are riders better suited for it.”

Why would Melgren want Riorson as a professor?

What does Dain mean by “And my father is clearly just…beyond help in general.” Again, does Dain know something, or is this foreshadowing for when we finally realize that General Aetos is venin or working with venin?

Chapter 14 gives us more information on the quest squad. Ok, that’s actually a cute-as-hell name. Why does Grady want to go north so much? It’s also our introduction to Anna Winshire, a talkative infantry captain with red hair and brown eyes.

And yes, I do love just how quick Xaden is with retorts. Because damn, he’s hot and smart. And terrifying…

“The hair rises on the back of my neck. There’s a flash of something…cold in his eyes, but it’s gone with a single blink.” Huh. So there it is—the darkness in Xaden’s soul. It’s the second time Violet feels it. It worries me that this might not be going our way, to be honest with you.

“We’ve been given six months to find the seventh breed.” There it is. The number six again. Earlier in a previous chapter, they were given six books. Why six?

A little more information about the isles—“an officer hinted that an isle kingdom was involved hundreds of years after we severed contact.” Another clue about the feathertails and their relation to the second Krovland uprising.

And look! The number six…again! “going secretive with it about six months before he died.

I also think Violet has incredible intuition. She’s been following it in Iron Flame, and honestly, it feels magic. But also…it feels magic!

“Every bone in my body says to fly south.”

Not much happened in this chapter except for a reiteration that Violet and Xaden won’t be able to spend time together, as there is always someone watching them.
