Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 50

The epigraph is strong in this chapter. Xaden is basically taking ownership and control over all Tyrrish citizens in military service. How long until they become independent again?

The chapter opens with one of the nightmares.

“My magic never works here, but his always does.”

Because this is no ordinary nightmare. This is how we know the Sage is a dream walker!

“My hand… it doesn’t look like mine—”

Finally! We’re getting more about those shared nightmares Rebecca Yarros has been bamboozling us with.

“If I have the courage to let go of the impossible dreams I’ve clung to and accept the fate Zihnal has dealt me.”

Zihnal deals fates, apparently. One must wonder just how important those gifts are now.

“I jerk my head up, only to find the Sword of Tyrrendor at my throat. The Sage draws his arm back—”

What is happening here? Xaden has the sword. How did it end up being with the Sage? Did Xaden give the Sage his sword? Did the Sage have the sword from before? Maybe being a previous Duke of Tyrrendor? A royal even?

And finally. FINALLY! They are discussing the nightmares. The recurring nightmare Violet has been having.

“I had a relic on my left wrist, right where yours all start. And my hand didn’t look like mine. Now that I’m thinking about it, it looked like… yours. Who knows? What was yours about?”

YES! You guys, I’m so excited.

“You were in my dream.”

There it is. Do you remember the cool article I wrote a million years ago about Violet being a “dream seeker?” No? I don’t blame you, because it was one of my least popular articles and theories for her second signet. I’m so, so excited because it’s such a cool signet.

Alright, let’s continue. Violet was in Xaden’s dreams…

“Is sharing dreams even possible? Some effect of our bond?”
“No. They’re my dreams.”

Well, that’s that. We have confirmation. Xaden’s dreams. And we also have confirmation that Violet was in Maren’s dream.

For the record, I want to make this clear. Cat is NOT the future Queen of Tyrrendor, ok? She can dream about it as much as she wants. Maren too. And no matter how much I like Maren—nope! That’s NOT Cat’s destiny. Ok, thank you, rant over.

CONFIRMATION OF VIOLET’S SECOND SIGNET:

“There is if you’re a dream-walker.” He nods thoughtfully, and my heart pounds as I guess what he’s about to say. “It must be your second signet—the one being bonded to Andarna gives you. It would make sense. Her kind are peaceful, and the ability itself would be passive, even a gift in a culture like that.”

Violet is a dream walker!!!! Whooohooo. I also think the Sage is a dream walker, btw. And now it’s the best time to read my theory on why Violet’s second signet is just so dangerous.

“You don’t read them. You walk straight into them when unconscious.”
“That makes sense. My signet doesn’t work on dragons, and I’m guessing yours doesn’t, either, so you unknowingly developed it on a human.”

Good to know. Although I do wonder if that’s not entirely true…

And just as we have confirmation from Maren, there is an incoming horde. Why is it that we can never have a full-on conversation around here without someone attacking? Well played, Rebecca, well played.

    I always wondered if her talking to Liam when she was being tortured was part of her signet too. Was she hallucinating or in the mind of those in the afterworld?
