Loial's Gold-Flecked Eyes - Talia and Xaden - and The True Cure for Xaden

This theory is brought to you by the one and only: Kevin. Chances are you’ve seen Kevin in the comments section a lot. Kevin loves the Empyrean Series, and he’s really smart with his theories.

Edit to add: Kevin would also like to give ‘Reddit user Tairnsilverone’ some credit for helping with this theory.

I’ve been sitting on this theory for a couple of months, out of deference to Rebecca Yarros. But since parts of it have already cropped up on forums, now’s as good a time as any for a full reveal – with a massive spoiler warning for the final two books of the series.

Xaden’s mother, Talia, is a dedicated priestess of Loial, Goddess of Love. Her role involves forging alliances with major houses by providing male heirs (the sample size is small) born dedicated to Loial. This sidesteps the law changed in 200 A.U. that forbade guardians from dedicating their children to their favorite deity.

Only Dunne and Loial demand lifetime service. Dunne’s followers have silver hair, while Loial’s… have gold-flecked eyes.

This explains how Xaden will be ‘cured’ and why, unlike Theophanie, the process won’t be fatal.

Let’s back up and work through this slowly. Most Empyrean theories rely on what’s written, and Yarros hides Easter eggs masterfully. For example, in Fourth Wing, Chapter 2, as Violet prepares to walk the parapet:

“… as thunder cracks above me, the sound oddly comforting. I’ve always loved the nights where storms beat against the fortress window, both illuminating and throwing shadows over the books I curl up with…”

In two sentences: storms, lightning, shadows, books – the entire premise revealed.

Deeper theories, though, hinge on what Yarros doesn’t reveal. Take the 12 runed daggers Xaden made for Violet. One unlocked a door by ‘need’, another blocked Catriona’s mindwork, and in Onyx Storm, a third blocked the sun – opening yet another rabbit hole we won’t dive into now. The point: Violet never asked the obvious question, “What else do these daggers do?” because Yarros is saving that reveal.

The Quest Squad skipped Loysam, Loial’s island, on their journey to find the irids. It’s either irrelevant or deeply important. Likely the latter. Had they visited, they’d have discovered those dedicated to Loial have gold-flecked eyes, and Yarros wasn’t ready for that reveal.

It’s assumed Talia came from Hedontis because she was found there married to Faris (second of the Triumvirate) with two sons, the eldest about eleven. She told Xaden bedtime stories about a land without war where people had purple eyes – not because she was from there, but because it was her next destination. She’d already contracted to provide an heir to Fen Riorson in Navarre and was now fulfilling her role in Hedontis. Given her sons’ ages, had the Quest Squad arrived months later, she might have already moved on. She may have ended up in Cordyn married to Viscount Tecarus, Poromiel’s second most powerful noble – though now that he’s King, that future is less clear. Tecarus is described as in his late 40s, Talia in her early 40s.

People from Hedontis don’t travel by water and typically have light eyes that turn purple. Talia traveled to and from Tyrrendor and has dark brown eyes with gold flecks.

The introduction of Theophanie laid out the book’s path. Theo was a priestess of Dunne who abandoned her position centuries ago when she turned venin. Centuries? Berwyn said he’d been waiting centuries for someone like Xaden and he’s still a sage compared to Theo’s maven rank. In Onyx Storm, Theo noted few were faster or older than her. Venin don’t die naturally, so General Daramor is likely still lurking, possibly far older than six centuries.

Theo still yearned for temple but couldn’t enter one without losing the power that kept her alive – in other words, being de-venined (and in turn, killed). Aaric brought the temple to her using a knife made from temple stone. When stabbed, her venin power was removed, and her body reverted to its natural (dead) state. The difference is Xaden has only been venin for under a year. The final book will likely conclude around Violet’s graduation, meaning he can be safely cured.

What we don’t know is whether Xaden must be lured into one of Loial’s temples or if other details distinguish dedication to Dunne from Loial. Remember, “There is no goddess more wrathful than Dunne. Entering Her temple will slice the soul from any attendant who has shunned Her grace.”

Quickly – Violet has a pre-existing relationship with Malek forged when her mother almost died during pregnancy. In this series, “almost died” equates to meeting Malek, while actual death means the soul is commended to him. This is why Violet’s dedication to Dunne couldn’t be completed, leaving only her hair ends silver.

Consider Iron Flame when Varrish tortured Violet and Liam appeared. He said:

“… maybe Malek sent me as a kindness.”

Take it literally. Violet noted he looked exactly as the last time she saw him, dressed in flight leathers. Liam died bonded to his dragon, leaving his body intact. Malek sent Liam as a kindness – and Jack Barlowe too, who also “met Malek” when he saved Violet atop the Academy building. Jack wouldn’t abandon his station to save a stranger without a divine shove.

When Violet nearly died after Resson, Brennan – another who “met Malek” – was there to save her. During the wardstone pouring at Basgiath, her mother, also previously touched by Malek, sacrificed herself for Violet.

Even Tairn “almost died.” His arrival at Violet’s threshing might have been Malek’s work rather than Sgaeyl’s or Andarna’s. Tairn also summoned Xaden when cadets broke into her room.

In Onyx Storm, Aaric gave Violet a letter with the stone dagger:

“A gift from one servant of Dunne to another. I must warn you – only those touched by the gods should wield their wrath. I will pray to Her that she need not use it to avoid reacquainting herself with the other who curries her favor. Her path is still not set.”

Simplified: “A gift from one servant of Dunne to Violet. Only those touched by the gods should wield their wrath. I pray she doesn’t need it and reacquaint herself with Malek. Her path with Dunne and Malek is still undecided.”

Finally, some math. In Violet’s first year, the Great War ended 632 years ago. Andarna remained unhatched for 650 years, her egg left roughly 20 years before the war. Only six riders bonded, meaning irids never bonded then. Everything we know about bonding and signets is based on non-irid dragons.

Irids are described as ‘magic’. Violet, Tairn, and Andarna alone could communicate on the islands. It’s not a stretch to think Andarna was the source. Lightning struck during Violet’s fight with Queen Marlis. The island had no magic, so it was dismissed as coincidence. Violet was carrying two runes that block the sun’s power: one rune was on a dagger from Xaden, another rune came from Mira. Blocking the sun in this context is , perhaps, linked to blocking certain forms of sky-based magic (including lightning power). Early in the fight with Marlis, Violet threw one dagger away and lost the other. This means that by losing both runes, her block on sky magic was removed. Perhaps one or both of those daggers carried the sun-blocking rune. When she lost them, her natural ability to call on sky magic – like lightning – was no longer blocked.

So the lightning strike wasn’t a coincidence. It was Violet unconsciously channelling sky magic because the runes were no longer suppressing her.

When the first quest squad left Samara to retrieve the citrine, Violet carried only one sun-shielding rune. Magic slipped free, power expanded around her, and she felt an urge to pluck strands from the sky and weave runes. Tairn told her there was actually less power, but she was growing strong enough to sense what was once invisible. Andarna said, “I could recognize it if you ever let me come with you,” implying that Andarna knows this sky magic and could help Violet use it if Violet let her join on quests. Even while carrying one rune blocking her power, Violet could sense this sky magic. Imagine what she could sense if she carried no runes at all. It implies that the runes are suppressing her true magical abilities, possibly related to her unique bond with Andarna and her lightning power.

We’ve been told the Great War was won when a rider drew on sky power. Venin say Violet has this ability but doesn’t know how to access it. Even the first six riders seemed unaware an irid had ever bonded – suggesting Violet may be the first. She is a dreamwalker, but Andarna may yet give her more. Yarros may have hidden this through the sun-blocking runes on Violet’s daggers and Mira’s rune. Two runes block sensations; one still leaves her feeling the urge to weave runes from the sky. Imagine an absence of runes.

When Andarna arrived during the Unnbriel fight with Marlis:

“… and the air charges in a way I’m all too familiar with… The heat within me snaps outward and breaks with my voice. Lightning streaks downwards.”

Violet asked if she was okay. Andarna replied, “I am… angry.” When Xaden asked if Violet called the lightning, she said no, but the heat, anger, and snap made her wonder if the power came from Dunne.

As you can see, there are multiple theories here woven into one text. Runes, Gods…and so much more to be uncovered.

I think Xaden’s dedication to Loial offers a cure. Violet has subtle protection from Malek while being partially tied to Dunne. The runed daggers will remain significant. Book 5 will likely end around Violet’s graduation. Violet’s paternal grandmother, Colonel Daxton, once curated the scribe quadrant like Colonel Markham and knows all the secrets. We need to meet her, no doubt.

I have no idea who the new ‘brother’ is, but it feels like the puzzle locks on Asher’s books. The obvious (Bodhi) and second guess (Garrick) are wrong…

My thoughts and comments on Kevin’s theories

IIn all fairness, I was ready for one theory, but instead I got a ramification of so many fragments that I don’t know what to do with myself.

Let’s start from the beginning: the gold-flecked eyes. Interestingly enough, I hadn’t considered the possibility that both Xaden and Talia could have been touched by Loial. It actually makes an awful lot of sense. When we were on Dunne’s isle, hair was the main feature that marked the priestesses – not their eyes.

In fact, at some point, Violet says, “I would almost swear her eyes flash golden and glance my way for a second,” referring to Andarna taking the form of Dunne. Golden eyes, not onyx with gold flecks. That’s an important distinction.

Meaning it makes perfect sense why we haven’t gone to Loial’s isle yet. She might be the key to saving Xaden.

Kevin’s theory also makes sense when it comes to Talia’s contract. As a priestess of Loial, carrying children and creating legacies aligns perfectly. “Marriage is a necessary evil to secure the line. Nothing more. Save love for your children.” That’s what Fen Riorson said, right? Maybe this is Loial’s way of ensuring love in its purest form still exists – for the children.

Furthermore, Kevin’s theory dives into why Violet is favoured by Malek. Oh, I’m 100% with him on this one. Violet has been touched by both Dunne and Malek, and when asked to pick one in front of Dunne… she picked “him.”

Dunne will accept you. It is not too late to choose Her.”
I raise my eyebrows at the woman. “I choose him.”

Whether Violet was referring to Xaden or Tairn, her answer remains the same. But could it actually have been Malek?

Finally, I want to touch on Kevin’s idea that right now, Violet is unable to access sky magic because of Xaden’s runes. Could he unknowingly be suppressing her potential? It’s possible. I like where Kevin is going with this. It could also explain why, now that she’s experienced sky magic, she’s become magic herself – which is why, at night, with no runes or anything, she can still dreamwalk despite not being bonded to Andarna.

Ahhh, this was a great one, Kevin. Thank you so much for putting it all together. I can see you’re reading the books on repeat, just like the rest of us.

Share that Venin and Wyvern are real!

  1. Every time I read the books (15 or 16 times for FW and IF but only 8 so far for OS) I’m looking for small details to support or negate a particular theory. It is said that a new poker player plays his hand while a more experienced person plays his opponents hand. From there the real pros play what they think their opponent believes they have… and so on. For these books most theories are based upon what is written but the most intriguing involve topics avoided and obvious questions not asked because these represent the details both introduced and then hidden for later.

For example… the entire story arc involving Theophanie served as a foundation for how a venin can be cured while at the same time this as both singular to Dunne, priestesses of Dunne, and the death of the venin. Not much of a cure for Xaden if he dies…

So to be cured Xaden requires a lifetime dedication to a god, some way for the god to respond, and a limited time being venin.

As an aside… if one goes back and thinks about how magnetic Xaden was- for everyone but mostly Violet- then ponder whether her attraction was merely 20-year old hormones or, perhaps, the aura that comes from being dedicated to the god of love.

Violet is connected to the god of war and Xaden calls her ‘violence’. Xaden yearns for love (3 little words) and Violet is drawn like a moth to a flame

    1. Hi Kevin, I cannot thank you enough for putting together this theory. I LOVED reading it. It’s taken me a little while to be able to push it live, but I think it wins as my favorite Onyx Storm theory so far. I got your email with more supporting facts and I will edit to add later today/tomorrow <3
I’ve started Fourth Wing again and I’m doing the read along for it, because I think it will be so cool so find more data.

      1. Hi, I Like the theory. However, on Hedotis Violets eyes are described as an unusual mix of Blue, Green and *Gold*. Furthermore, it is later stated that Violets eyes are the same colour as her dads eyes.
So the golden eye hint was also placed for violets family. If eye colour is linked to a specific god, does that mean Xaden and Violet could be dedicated to the same god/goddess?

  2. Hi Cory. Hi Kevin – nice to meet you. Wow, thanks, that looks good. I’ve already read some theories that Xaden is semi-dedicated to Loial, and they do make sense. But the idea that it might have something to do with his eyes—that’s completely new to me, and yeah, it does make sense. Hair-eyes, silver-gold! Yes!

It’s true that Loial wouldn’t necessarily have to be wrathful—she could just un-venin him (like, make him bleed, same way Theophanie), but without killing him.

Totally agree about the daggers. I just don’t think it has anything to do with Andarna. I trust Theo on that—she got the power of the sky from Tairn, her signet is pure power, includint power of the sky, it´s not just lightning (lightning just feels more natural to her at the moment because of her mother and Dunne)- it is a combat signet). But otherwise, I think the power of the sky—the greatest power—is the sun, the brightest light. If Andarna were at the center of it, I think she’d be able to communicate with other dragons and Gryphons.
And I completely agree—the obvious answer is not the correct one.

    1. Yes, I just finished onyx storm a couple days ago, and I’ve been thinking about this a lot. I think that Violet’s power is not just wheeling lightning but wielding energy, from the sky, which would be the sun. Or it could even be stars. Wasn’t there a passage where she was called her father’s brightest star or something like that? Anyway, I think I love the idea of Xaden wielding shadow, and violet wielding light. It would be the two of them, balancing each other out, the light balancing out the shadow, light versus dark, complete balance. Which I think is a running theme throughout the series don’t you think?

      1. That totally makes sense. Also, the God of love would balance the God of war.

  3. I assume that the gods’ power and relevance comes from worship so if the venin win then gradually the gods will fade to nothingness. Malek choosing Violet before she was born suggests either prophecy or precognition which, I suppose, isn’t too much of a leap given that Andarna hatched two years before Violet entered the rider’s quadrant and Aaric is a limited precog.

What is curious is if the theory is correct Malek nudged Tairn into saving Violet at threshing as well as Barlowe when she was going to die in the roof of the Academic building. While both Tairn and Jack had ‘almost died’ it wouldn’t have been obvious that a god (Malek) could influence both dragons and initiate venin. Especially after Tairn said that dragons pay no heed to human’s puny gods…

  4. From Kevin:

Thank you and, of course, massive appreciation to Cory for not tossing this one in the heap of lame theories.

It began with the lack of information about where Talia came from. Xaden thought Poromiel but she had to be important in some way to have married Fen. Forge alliances and continue the line? She did the latter but why was she important? She’s not a noble so what was it?

The two keys were the constant mention of gold-flecked eyes and the fact that RY had them skip Loysam. From there the jump was that she was hiding important details for later on.

Then she wrote the entire arc explaining that de-venining is possible if it involves a dedication to Dunne plus the mention that only Dunne and Loial require life-time service.

What would be expected of a priestess to the goddess of love? Why was Talia- a seeming nobody- contracted to marry the second most powerful noble in Navarre and the second of the triumvirate? Why did, in both cases, she provide them with male heirs? Recall how, in Hedontis, they only saw the two boys from a fourth floor balcony so their eyes were never visible. It’s the details hidden that make the best theories. Plus, for an island that hasn’t witnessed dragons for centuries the boys enthusiasm at seeing one seemed telling.

Plus… Faris didn’t act as if Talia was the love of his life. Attempting to poison her first child and companions makes it appear more like a contractual relationship than love.

I’m doing this from memory but recall what Luca said at Violet’s presentation after first seeing the feathertail: silver and frail, gold and weak (or something similar). Gold and silver have been important for much of the series.

The basic point is that Xaden WILL be cured so the question is how. The arc involving Theophanie explains roughly how that can happen but it only works if, unknown to him, the dedication to a god already exists. Follow the bouncing balls and you end up here.

The connection between Violet to Malek is a bit tougher to support. Think of the characters that RY wrote ‘almost died’. Brennan, Lilith, Tairn, Jack, and even Liam and how they all saved Violet

  5. Cory: I didn’t realize that part of this theory was on Reddit before I sketched it out. I wasn’t a Reddit member at the time but if possible I’d like to give ‘Reddit user Tairnsilverone’ some credit. He made a very good argument for gold-flecked eyes representing a dedication to Loiallso we’ve chatted back and forth for a couple of days and I thought I would see if you could give him some credit as well.

  6. It’s also interesting to note the continuous dichotomies & juxtapositions between Xaden & Vi, especially within the theme of light & dark, good & bad. If she picks Malek, the God of Death, and he is tied to the God of Love, that seems very fitting for the cure to be the two of them. Similarly, he pulled literal dark energy from the ground while she herself is pulling light energy from the sky.

    1. My theory is that Love is the opposite of War. The opposite of Death isn’t love — the opposite of death is life. And in Navarre, as part of the imbalance, they’ve forgotten both love (they basically don’t worship Lioala) and the Life attribute of Amari as Malek’s counterpart. Malek was stripped of the role of king (just like the true king was replaced by the false one, Tauri), and his role was reduced to death, while Amari was stripped of her title as the Goddess of Life. The foreshadowing is incredible — everything has a balance, and death must have one too. Dain says to Sloane, “You are the life” — Mairi-Amari… I believe Sloane will be her messenger. In constras to her brother Liam – he was sent by Malek. And I also think Talia will be the one dedicated to the Goddess of Life, the Queen of Gods — Amari. Her role isn’t about romance or love; she is meant to bear a child, to give life. Even Tarin calls her the Goddess of Love. Her dedication isn for lifeteme, Amari alows to choose their timeline of service ) for example until Xaden´s 10th birthday)

    2. I wish I would’ve read this comment before I commented myself, about the light versus dark and balancing each other out. But yes, I agree with what you’re saying.

  7. This is incredible and if it comes to be in book 4 and 5, highlights what a great writer RY is. Thank you to everyone for contributing to this thoughtful theory.

  8. Sry this just came to me, but will xaden and violet Mariage hold up?

Im just thinking that because in the book it says that riders arent allowed to mary after graduation,
Since violet is still i year 2, it isn’t possible that the markige may be revoked or have pushback or punishment

    Im just saying…..

    1. I think the loophole is Xaden already graduated. Now Violet is a duchess and title trumps rank.

Xaden always said, the right way isn’t the only way.

  9. Hi!
    I’m Maia
I have read some of the theories published here, which lead me to one of my own.
If Xaden was dedicated to the goddess of love, and everything that made him venim was in fact, made for love, I think he would have not lost the favour of the goddess.
It still fits with your theories, but if we twist it a little we can hope that she would cure him.
He, after all dedicated his life in her service.
    The marked ones?
    Self sacrifice for love.
    Venim?
    For love.
The last thing he let in past his wall of ice?
    Violet’s love.
I for other part don’t believe the daggers are blocking her.
Is more that she keeps not listening to Adarna.
And much things at the same time.
Also that Jake saved her because he was under venim orders, because they want her. Not because of Malek.
I think Liam is yes from him.
And when she said “I chose him” it was always Xaden, beyond all reason.
    A pleasure reading you all!

    1. Yes!!!! Agree!

  10. I am going to push the original theory a bit further down the road. One of the big mysteries is the identity of the ‘new brother’ but if the above theory is correct (Xaden can be cured due to a prior dedication that manifests through gold-flecked eyes) then the new brother is going to be collateral damage. In other words if it is, say, Bodhi there won’t be a way to bring him back.

But… what about Aaric and his unusually coloured green eyes? Are the members of the royal line dedicated to Hedeon? Is this reflected in ‘King Tauri the wise’? The only isle with a connection to the colour green was Hedotis so there is at least a chance that, if Aaric is the new brother, that he could be saved as well.

  11. New to these discussions, but have listened to and read all 3 books multiple times now. And came across this page. Love the theories.
Just something to add to Kevin. If “meeting Malek” means you are potentially touched by a god, would that mean every person with a relic is touched by a god. The runes they were holding saved their lives and caused the relic right? So technically they all had a meeting with Malek. Just a wayward thought while reading this and curious as to what that could mean?!

  12. I love this theory. I think another part that supports that irid’s are magic is that now Mira can wield her signet and be a ward after being in the field with Violet.

  13. Interesting theory about Loial, Xaden, and Talia.

In theory theirs more than one reason Xaden married Violet though.

    Violets promise.
    Xaden + Violet = Love
If Xaden is venin and marries Violet, venin do not hurt their loved ones.
If Xaden is some how aligned to Loial because of Talia, it’s possible that Xaden made the connection or researched it? As in, if Xaden is ALREADY married when he goes to Loials temple then he can’t be forced to endure a “contract marriage” Xaden was very against his betrothal to Catriona and insisted that they weren’t engaged (because Xaden never asked Catriona to marry him).
Talia tries to encourage Xaden into a contract marriage with Catriona at dinner to which Xaden refuses, but says he would accept such a contract with Violet as long as the contract stated eternity. The Triumvirate do not agree and no such contract is made.

So if Talia is a priestess of Loial and Xaden is dedicated or partially dedicated, not dedicated at all…
The theory of Xaden going to the temple of Loial could have a similar consequence that going to Dunnes temple would have on Theophanie. Theophanie said going to the temple would “sever” the venin in her, which has kept her alive all those years. Well, in onyx storm Violet says Dunne is a wrathful goddess who cleaves the SOUL from high priestesses who turn their back on her. Interesting since, venin supposedly do not have a soul to cleave, and yet Theophanie bleeds, then dies after being stabbed by a dagger from Dunne… interesting.

Xaden is not centuries old, so he likely would not die if such temple of Loial would truly cleave the venin from him. Further Xaden has Saegyl to sustain his life, the same as Tarin sustains Violets.
As the bond of Venin should not exist, and technically neither should Andarnas bond with Violet. And yet here we are… oh and theirs the part where Andarna can manipulate “bonds” because they are “magic” and Andarna is magic. I feel like Andarna could break the bond Xaden and Berwyn have since it is not supposed to exist.

  14. Hi Kevin
I’m new here but I came to a wild theory that lines up with yours. They remind me of Hades and Persephone in a sense they will rule together balancing both realms but I think the irids hide because they know humans don’t understand magic yet. Signets are just fragments, not the whole power. Venin are what happen when humans take directly from the source without bond or balance. Andarna is the bridge, and she may be the key to teaching Violet and Xaden how magic was always meant to flow.
