Onyx Storm Read Along – Chapter 55

It goes without saying that THERE ARE MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. If you haven’t read this chapter of Onyx Storm, please go read it first. Please note that some spoilers from future chapters will be found here.

All epigraphs have been amazing, but I feel them strongly for Onyx Storm. We learn that Tyrrendor is not just a strategic resource for manpower, but also for talladium—without which Navarre cannot make the weapons that power the wards and kill venin. Once again, I have to ask: why isn’t Tyrrendor the main royal seat? I think it used to be, and I think the current royal family is the fake one who took power from Tyrrendor.

We learn a little more about the different power of Andarna and Tairn, and how it’s used for runes. Delicate threads vs unruly power. Tairn doesn’t do anything in half measures.

I think we’ve put a lot of emphasis on runes and just how good Cat is at them because she’s going to have to do… something in the following books. RY did say that everyone has a role to play, and I think special rules will be Cat’s speciality.

We have Imogen, Cat, Quinn, and Sloane as being fantastic at runes, with Baylore and Maren being close seconds. Bodhi is right up there with Cat, so he is also extraordinary. We should take stock of this information, as I have no doubt it will come in useful later.

“So far the only consensus is that certain materials can carry magic beyond the Continent and others can’t.”
But which ones? And of course… why?

I am purposely going over Quinn’s comments here. It is foreshadowing, and honestly, I don’t love it.

“And not into a cloud. From the sky.”
It might feel representative, but I think it is. Violet is discovering that she can command the sky. Finally!

“You are the duke. I am the rider. That’s how it was always meant to be until our parents got themselves executed.”

Interesting piece of information here. Was Fen’s sister a rider? Was her husband? We know Fen was infantry and that Xaden was meant to be the same until forced to cross parapet and take responsibility for all marked ones.

A quick reminder that this is an Easter egg and a major foreshadowing for the end of the book:
“but the high priestess of Dunne’s temple has written to say that Dunne holds you and Rhiannon in her regard, and that she is in my debt and owes me whatever favour I see fit.”

The chapter ends with Xaden admitting that he is preparing for his own demise. And just like that, we know that he has a plan that doesn’t include just Bodhi. He doesn’t want Bodhi to necessarily take over. He wants Bodhi to be Violet’s right hand…

And just like that… his smile instantly becomes a core memory.
