Major spoilers ahead, so I’m going to assume you’ve finished the entire series. These thoughts cover all the books, not just Fourth Wing.
There’s nothing more delicious than reading the same chapter, but from Xaden’s POV.
It’s important to note that Xaden slams his mental shields down when he is around anyone, let alone a memory reader. This is a very important detail and Easter egg for Iron Flame, when we learn for sure that Xaden is indeed a type of inntinnsic.
“Gods, please give me a reason to beat the pompous, Codex-loving shit out of him. Just once.” This is beyond perfection. Bravo, Mrs. Yarros, BRAVO! That sums up Dain in a sentence.
Check this out: “it’s fear making her eyes more amber.” As we know, and if you remember, Violet’s eyes change depending on her state. Sometimes more blue, more green, or more amber. Very similar to her dragon, Andarna, wouldn’t you say?
“Well-the-fuck-aware!” Shit. So much for only slipping—my control just evaporated. I think this is also the first time we see that Xaden’s control is only control when it’s not about Violet. Interesting. We know he can control himself so well in almost all circumstances…but around her.
Oh, and take a moment, please, to adore Sgaeyl. Ruthless, annoyed, irritated, and short with Xaden. The perfect asshole dragon that somehow is mated to Tairn. Two grumpy middle-aged dragons: perfect!
The conversation between Xaden and Sgaeyl is the delicious thing here. The fact that Sgaeyl calls him out, that he indeed started moving before Tairn arrived to protect Violet. Also, I love that, so far, dragons don’t seem to call anyone by their names. Have you noticed that? Sgaeyl calls Dain “colonel’s offspring.”
“Is this what it’s going to be like, trying to keep this woman alive? She’ll stand up to three armed bullies to defend the smallest dragon, but she won’t watch where the fuck she’s walking?” Also one of my favorite Xaden inner monologues.
Please pay attention. Anger highlights the blue in her eyes.
Between the conversations and the inner thoughts shared between Sgaeyl and Xaden, yet another thing comes to our attention: Sgaeyl does not like the cold. I think this is important to remember for when we try to link Gods with dragons, dragons with isles, and locations…
This is also when we learn a little more about Garrick’s dragon. And yeah, his name is perfect for Garrick’s signet. Still perfect.
And then we get the beauty of learning the colors of the bonds. The hard sapphire Xaden feels toward Sgaeyl. The onyx he recognizes as Tairn, and the other, a glimmering strand of… silver, like the ends of her hair.
I think this is such an important clue. Remember when we learn about Andarna, we learn that Violet sees her as golden. Violet sees Xaden as the midnight sky. But why silver? What type of entity is Violet? Is she part God? Part dragon?
I also adore the conversation between Garrick and Xaden, how Garrick immediately can tell just how jealous Xaden is. And honestly? As readers, we love it too.
We guess the best thing would be for Xaden to indeed stay away from Violet at this point. But as Sgaeyl politely said it… he won’t…our book and romance is only just beginning!
