Empyrean Series Inspired Drinks (Dragons Edition)

We’re all reading Fourth Wing and Iron Flame on repeat. And we’ve become obsessed with the Empyrean Series, which is why I propose that we all host books clubs and parties with Fourth Wing and Iron Flame drinks.

You might be wondering why I haven’t been as active here this past couple of weeks. Well, I’ve been experimenting with recipes for Empyrean Series inspired drinks. I created a set of mocktails that represent each dragon color and a set of cocktails that I’m working on for our riders only members.

All mocktails below could potentially be adapted to be made alcoholic. I will continue to create new elixirs as we go along.

So far, I created a black cocktail for Tairn which I cutely called Tairn’s Twilight Dragonade. It’s a black lemonade which is perfect for any party. You can add your own alcohol to it if you prefer. Then I made a twist of the original blue lagoon to create Sgaeyl’s Azure Dragoon. It’s the perfect blue mocktail that everyone who tried it loved!

I’m still working on Andarna the teenager mocktail, but I did manage to create an epic Golden Andarna drink. Andarna’s Golden Gleam Mocktail is based on cider with edible gold. It looks so pretty, and the resulting drink is just as bubbly as Andarna’s personality.

For the red dragon, I picked Deigh, of course because we do need to raise a glass to the fallen (we miss you, Liam). Deigh’s Crimson Quencher is a combo of kombucha with orange and cranberry juice. Green means Feirge, which is my own take on a healthier cucumber mojito. I called this one Feirge Green Wiseito because green dragons are wise + mojito.

It was difficult to pick a brown, as I had some serious contenders like Chradh and Aimsir. In the end I decided to go for Ridoc’s Aotrom. Do you remember in Iron Flame he says he is the God of land navigation? Because of it, I combined Aotrom’s brown color with Ridoc’s awesome navigational abilities and created a mocktail called Aotrom’s Terran Nectar. The resulting mocktail is indeed brown in color thanks to the pear spice.

Orange dragons are the most unstable and let’s face it, most of them are our enemies. I do have a lot of suspicion going on when it comes to Brennan and, sorry to say, Imogen too since she is also bonded to an orange. I did pick Marbh this time though, because Brennan, no matter what, seems to love Violet to want to mend her all the time. Marbh’s Citrus Blaze is based on a herbal syrup I use all the time for many mocktails. Given Brennan’s affinity for poisons and elixirs, I thought making your own herb syrup for the cocktail hits the right spot.

Tairn’s Twilight Dragonade

Tairn's Twilight Dragonade

Ingredients:

  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice from 2-3 lemons
  • 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • Water
  • Black food colouring (4-5 drops, or as needed to achieve desired colour)
  • Ice cubes
  • Sugar (optional, for adjusting sweetness)
  • Lemon slices or blueberries for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Lemonade Base:
    • Squeeze the juice from 2-3 lemons, ensuring you remove any seeds.
    • In a pitcher, mix the fresh lemon juice with water to dilute. The typical ratio is about 1 part lemon juice to 3 parts water, but you can adjust this to your taste preference.
  2. Sweeten the Lemonade:
    • Add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup to the lemonade mixture. If you prefer it sweeter, you can add some sugar at this point as well. Stir well until the maple syrup (and sugar, if used) is fully dissolved.
  3. Add Black Food Colouring:
    • In a separate small bowl or cup, mix about 4-5 drops of black food colouring with a small amount of water to create a black liquid. Adjust the amount of food colouring based on how intense you want the colour to be.
    • Combine this black liquid with the lemonade base and stir thoroughly until the lemonade turns black.
  4. Serve:
    • Fill glasses with ice cubes to the top.
    • Pour the black lemonade over the ice cubes, filling each glass.
    • Garnish with lemon slices or blueberries for a contrast in colour and added flavour.
  5. Enjoy:
    • Serve immediately and enjoy the refreshing, unique twist on traditional lemonade.

Sgaeyl’s Azure Dragoon

Sgaeyl's Azure Dragoon

Ingredients:

  • 1 Lemon, sliced for garnish
  • 3 tablespoons Blue Curacao Syrup
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Lime or Lemon Juice
  • Ice Cubes
  • 12 ounces Sparkling Water, Club Soda, or Sprite (chilled)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Glass:
    • Fill a tall glass or a highball glass with ice cubes to keep your drink chilled.
  2. Mix the Ingredients:
    • In the glass over the ice, add 3 tablespoons of blue Curacao syrup. This will give your cocktail its signature Sgaeyl blue colour.
    • Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lime or lemon juice to introduce a citrusy tang to the cocktail, balancing the sweetness of the syrup.
  3. Add the Fizz:
    • Gently pour 12 ounces of chilled sparkling water, club soda, or Sprite over the syrup and juice mixture. The choice between these options depends on your preference for sweetness and fizziness. Sparkling water will give a more subtle taste, club soda a more fizzy texture, and Sprite a sweeter flavour.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Garnish the drink with a slice or two of lemon on the rim of the glass or floating on top. The lemon slices add a fresh visual appeal and a hint of lemony aroma to the cocktail.
  5. Enjoy:
    • Stir the cocktail gently before drinking to mix the blue Curacao syrup with the sparkling liquid, creating a mesmerizing Sgaeyl blue hue throughout the drink.
