Now, let’s analyze this incredible family tree together.

There’s also some interesting speculation surrounding Asher Daxton and the Sorrengail name. Some believe Asher adopted Lilith’s surname after marrying her. Additionally, the books mention a Colonel Daxton, leading to theories that he was a relative—perhaps Asher’s father or even Niara.

We also know that Niara never liked Lilith, which could explain why Asher took her surname rather than the other way around. Perhaps Lilith wasn’t welcomed into the Daxton family, prompting Asher to align with hers instead.

Another thing I noticed in the books is that there is an emphasis on

  1. So appreciate this family tree. Can’t wait until she can expand it. As for the surname question, I think surnames are based on rank and/or riders. Pretty sure this is either said or hinted at during quest squad’s time at Hedotis. If one spouse is a rider, that’s the surname taken (remember “legacy” cadets are favored in Fourth Wing). That’s the reason why the Sorrengail vs. Riorson conversation happened. Since Violet and Xaden are both riders, who’s name would they use? Outside of riders, I’m guessing it goes by who has the higher rank military wise or title, if their nobility. That’s my understanding. I will also take this opportunity to say one of my favorite things about the Empyrean series is that it’s not a Patriarchy!

    1. Do you think we will have Sorrengail-Riorson? That would be best 😀

      1. I hope it’s a hyphenated situation. Despite, the mouthful, both names have such history. I don’t like the tradition of women always taking men’s names, but it would also be really weird for Xaden to take what is ultimately Lilith’s last name, given his history with her. Though, he certainly seems to be over it. He’s got bigger problems!

        1. Is it weird of me that I would love Violet Riorson? I don’t know why. Although I think the Sorrengail legacy needs to continue also..
