Do you feel sorry for Dain?

Just like all of you, I felt this deep hatred towards Dain. Her best friend…how can someone betray her like that? I am not a violet person at all, but even I wanted to punch him in the face.

But then, his redemption arc in Iron Flame? The fact that he was so hurt, I really fell for it. I’m terrible at this haha

I just wanted to give him a hug? Like, I know he did something awful but he didn’t want to send him friend to die. He just did what he thought was right. And he did turn around, he did help, he did “betray” Navarre to do what’s right.

So yeah, I feel really bad for him now and want someone to give him a hug.

BUT, and hear me out. I talked about smells here and we know that Cath smells…bad. Is Dain a baddie?

yess! I agree! I felt soo bad for him like I just wanted to jump in the book to tell him that he’s now on the good side and maybe the people started forgiving him?

you have a very good theory about the smells but idk I just think that now that Dain knows the truth he will stay on the good side? i don’t know for Cath tho..

I think that meant to show that maybe Cath is too close to corruption? That maybe (and hopefully) she spent too much time close to Dain’s dad? Or his dragon? That could be a thing…

Lots of stories have that one naïve & idealistic character who only sees the world in black and white and thinks everyone plays by the rules. Dain is the embodiment of just that.

He puts his trust in ideals and the wrong people and in his defense who would like to think of their father as someone with cruel intentions?

There is a struggle within him ever since the beginning of the story, but since Vi was not yet willing to open up for a longer talk after they arrived in Aretia we don’t get a good insight into how he feels and what drives him.

I was so mad at him for babying Vi and for reading her mind and telling his father what he saw, but when I got to the torture scene, I had a feeling that he would do the right thing and I was super relieved that he did.

What I am not sure about is if he really had a revelation and is going to do his best to be the supportive friend that Vi needs (and who he should have been all along) or if there is another nasty twist coming our way.

I think Colonel Aetos is bad news and I remain sceptical about Dain’s intentions.
